144-hour Visa-free Transit Route

A and C should be different countries or regions out of Mainland China.
* Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan can be the Destination A or C, so the route "UK-Shanghai-Hong Kong" is acceptable as the typical route "US-Hangzhou-Japan".

1. Guangdong
2. Shanghai, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang

4.  Claim the luggage
5.  Go through the customs
6.  Leave the airport

how to apply for 144-hour visa-free transit

 Note for Step 3:

Upon arrival, find the 144-hour visa-free counter at the immigration inspection to apply for the entry permit, which will be stamped on your passport indicating the allowed stay time. Remember to tell the officer if you have a visa for China but don't want to use it this time.

Documents Needed for Application

Passport valid for at least 3 months from date of entry

British passport

Ticket to a third country with confirmed seat and date

International Flight Tickets

Fully completed Arrival/ Departure Card

China Temporary Arrival Card

* Prepare a valid visa if the third country or region in your plan requires.
* Hotel reservations may be required if you want to leave the airport.

How to count the layover time of 144 hours?

It counts from 00:00 of the day following passengers' arrival. That is to say, the allowed time to stay is actually longer than 144 hours.

Eg: If one arrives at 6:00 am on July 1, the layover time counts from 00:00 of July 2 and the passenger should hold a ticket with the scheduled departure time before 23:59 of July 7. In this case, the allowed stay period is 162 hours in maximum.

What can I do during the 144 hours?

A stroll by the West Lake in Hangzhou and a taste of the delicious local snacks must be a perfect ending of the trip.

A trip to Guangzhou, Shenzhen, or Zhuhai along China's south coast is a good choice to feel the energetic economic development.

Business Conferences and Trade Fairs

6 days are enough to attend various trade fairs or forums in Beijing, Shanghai, or the Canton Fair in Guangzhou, conduct market research, review suppliers' factories, or sign contracts with partners.

No, unfortunately this is not eligible for 144 or any other visa free transit scheme. The basic rule of 144 and other visa free transit schemes clearly states that the immediate points before and after a mainland Chinese stop have to be in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories: Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). As you can see your both immediate points are in one territory - Hong Kong.

You can think about adapting your itinerary by taking one of flight segments:

Hong Kong - Shanghai

or

Shanghai - Hong Kong

To be something like Macau to Shanghai or Shanghai to Macau. Since Macau is so close to Hong Kong that would be perfectly doable and in the same time eligible for 144 hour visa free transit.

Thank you. Would I qualify for the 144 TWOV if the itinerary was amended as follows:
Sydney - Shanghai, direct, non-stop flight
Shanghai - Hong Kong - Brisbane

Yes, you definitely would. This is eligible itinerary valid for the wider Shanghai area and you do not need any kind of visa. Have a nice journey.

Entry to mainland via port/land car rather than plane , qualify?
Hi there,

British passport holder (German resident) travelling from Berlin to Hong Kong via Doha (Qatar airways) landing tomorrow (Wednesday), hoping to do a day trip to Dongguan on Thursday, the return is Friday from Hong Kong. If we moved the return flight to travel out of mainland china back to Europe (ideally Berlin, but could be Frankfurt or another city), would this be viable for transit visa free (Berlin - HK - Guangdong - ?) Please advise !! THANK YOU!

Unfortunately, this is not possible because only the entry by plane to Shenzhen, Guangzhou and Jieyang Chaoshan airports is an eligible way how to enter Guangdong province. You can exit the province toward Hong Kong or Macau by taking, for example, a ferry, but the entry has to be by plane. So now your option is to take a flight from Hong Kong to Guangzhou and then to fly out toward Europe by a direct, nonstop flight. As far as I know, there are no direct flights from neither Guangzhou or Shenzhen to Berlin, but you have direct flights from both of them to Frankfurt.

Another option would be to really take a car or whatever to Lo Wu (Luohu) or Huanggang border crossing and to apply there for an ordinary Chinese, single entry visa that is valid for the entire country. The price of this visa for UK citizens is 626 CNY and when the visa is granted, you can travel to the entire country and you can also return to Hong Kong or fly out from any mainland Chinese airport toward Europe. Please, just do not confuse this ordinary, single entry visa with Shenzhen 5 day visa on arrival that is noticeably cheaper, but it also limits your movements to Shenzhen city limits only.

Yes, you are definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit valid for the entire Shanghai transit area and you do not need any kind of visa. You should just ensure that your flights to and from Shanghai do not have any additional landings that could compromise your eligibility for this visa free transit scheme. The basic rule of 144 hour visa free transit clearly states that the immediate points before and after a mainland Chinese destination have to be in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories: Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau), so your flights have to be of nonstop nature.

Traveling from the US to Asia
So happy China has a 144-hour visa free program. I'm trying to figure out if I can leave China and travel to the US. I am a US citizen but actually live in Mexico and am a legal resident there. My current flight plan is as follows:

US > Japan > South Korea > China > US

But if needed I could change it to

US > Japan > China > South Korea

Am I eligible for the 144-hour free visa program with the original flight plan? Or can you not be returning to your country of origin?

Both your itineraries are eligible for 144 hour visa free transit. There is no rule that prevents using your country of origin or any other. In reality the basic rule of 144 hour visa free transit only states that the immediate points before and after your mainland Chinese destination have to be in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories: Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). I recommend you to choose that itinerary that will be the most convenient for your needs.

"Eligible Territories" ... please confirm
Thank you for such great information. I would like to ask if you can point me directly to authority that "eligible territories" for A and C (in your schematic of eligible routes) DO include both Taiwan and Hong Kong.

We are US citizens and our daughter (who is now a US citizen but was born in Taiwan) will be in Taiwan for 2 weeks this summer for a language immersion camp. When we pick her up, we would like to travel to Shanghai and Nanjing on the 144-hour visa-free process (stay 3-4 days). We would then leave Shanghai and travel to Hong Kong and then return to US. Alternatively, we could fly from Taiwan to Hong Kong, then fly to Shanghai, and then return to US.

I have not found official documentation that Taiwan and Hong Kong are eligible territories for A and B.

Lastly, when I look at the application for a regular tourist visa (L), there are comments about when a person was born in China (including Taiwan) and that their old passport from China/Taiwan needs to be included in the application process. Do you know of any issues with the 144-hour visa-free process that we may have with a child who is fully a US citizen now with a US passport, but did once have a Taiwan passport (that passport still exists and is valid)?

Thank you so much for any information

David, you can easily check this detail by opening a free Timatic access at United Airlines website. It is not their Timatic, but they thankfully allow free access to it. Timatic is a comprehensive database that summarize all national travel/visa/transit rules of every single country and is used by all airport authorities in determining every single person eligibility for travel. In other words, you can insert as your origin point Taiwan and as your destination Hong Kong and a transit through Shanghai. You will see that this route is eligible since both Hong Kong and Taiwan, along with Macau, are eligible territories under 144 hour visa free transit. This is something that the authorities in both Taiwan and Shanghai will clearly see written in the way as you can see it as well.

To conclude... The fact that your daughter has/had Taiwanese passport will not affect her transit in Shanghai area (you are definitely allowed to visit Nanjing as well) because she is not arriving on a visa, but based on 144 hour visa free transit, so there is no visa at all. If she was planning to visit Shanghai on a visa, that would be different thing as you have already written. In this case (144 hour visa free transit) she does not need to accomplish any formality and she can rely on US passport only. She can bring Taiwanese passport as well, there is no problem about that, but it is US passport that matters in this case.

You should not worry, but just to proceed with your travel plans and to enjoy in every second of it.
