China’s Most Competitive & Innovative City

Shenzhen is a coastal city in the south of Guangdong Province, neighboring Daya Bay and Dapeng Bay to the east, Pearl River Estuary and Lingdingyang to the west, and Dongguan and Huizhou to the north and Hong Kong to the south. It is only 41 kilometers (25 miles) from Hong Kong. Benefiting from the superior location and China’s reform and opening-up policy, Shenzhen has become a modern and international metropolis since 1978. Dubbed as ‘China Silicon’, today’s Shenzhen gathers more than 14,000 high-tech companies including Huawei, Lenovo and Tencent. It also becomes the innovation hub as a new generation of start-ups emerging, which makes it the most competitive and innovative city in China.

Thanks to its developed economy, it is easy to get there quickly and comfortably by air, train or ship. What's more, Shenzhen is the only city in China that provides three modes of transportations for simultaneous comings and goings. Unfortunately local transportation is not equally convenient; transportation in the city is hit-or-miss due to the large population. However, the number of transportation options available helps to counteract the problems caused by crowding. In contrast, lodging in this city is very easy to do, as there are a number of hotels which frequently host businessmen and visitors from all over the world. Finally, when you visit there, make sure that you plan a day trip to Hong Kong, where you can enjoy the sites and attractions of the famous international metropolis.

While the city has had to overcome a number of obstacles resulting from this population swell, the city has also benefited from the increased diversity. Workers come to the city from almost every part of china, bringing with them their local traditions and cuisines. Visitors are able to sample foods from each of China's famous eight cuisines. Local dishes are also worth trying - Kejia is one of the many dishes that should not be missed.

There are direct trains from Guangzhou to HK. They may stop at Shenzhen for a few minutes to pick up passengers, just like metro trains. You just don't get off and wait in your seat. In a few minutes, it will run again.

Visa Requirements for Train Travel from Shenzhen to Hong Kong
Hello everyone,

I'm planning a trip where I'll be flying into Shenzhen and then wish to travel by train to Hong Kong. I'm unsure about the visa requirements for this particular route. Should I apply for a visa beforehand, or can I obtain a transport visa upon arrival at the counter in Shenzhen? Any guidance on the process or tips for a smooth transit would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Your itinerary is eligible for 24/144-hour visa-free transit and no visa is needed. But you need to print out the train ticket to HK and have it in hand when landing.
