Far from the large and noisy metropolis, Zhongshan City has its
unique quiet but charming natural and cultural sceneries. Sun
Yat-sen, the great forerunner of Chinese revolution, was born
in a small township forming part of Zhongshan City. In order to
commemorate his great contribution to the renaissance of China,
the city was called Zhongshan, Sun Yat-sen's Chinese family name.
At the same time, the locals marked their admiration for the great
man by constructing museums and a street in his honor. Dr.
Sun Yat-sen's Memorial Hall is located in the city center
and the Museum of Dr. Sun Yat-sen is constructed
in the Cuiheng Village, his birth place. If you have a deep interest
in modern Chinese history, these are must during your trip. The
former can be reached by No.1 bus and the latter is available
by No.12 and 48. The Sun Wen Xi Road is a tourist
pedestrian street and in its special way also commemorates Sun
Yat-sen. Culture is the main theme of this street which is decorated
with lifelike murals and sculptures.
The above three destinations have been included in the ten top
Views of Zhongshan City. The other seven are scenic spots namely,
the peak of Wugui Mountain and the green
cascade of the Yangtze River are highly praised by visitors.
Wugui Mountain has an elevation of 531 meters (about 1742 feet),
lying at the mouth of the Pearl River and teeming with many varieties
of flowers and plants. You can get there by taking buses of No.11A
and 11B. Actually, the green cascade of the Yangtze River is the
Yangtze River reservoir scenic spot, just nine kilometers (about
5.6 miles) from the city center. The hills around the reservoir
are covered in greenery that is reflected by the vast area of
water. It is a veritable Xanadu in the city.
In addition, the city has another treat that ranks with the top
ten attractions for visitors. For several hundred years, Xiaolan
County of Zhongshan has been famous for its chrysanthemums. It
is said that almost every family living this county has its private
garden filled with various kinds of chrysants. You can image the
splendid sight these present in autumn when the flowers are in
bloom. Each year from October to November, a mini-size showing
of mums will be held here.
Xinzhong Dao, an important transportation hub
of Zhongshan, is also one of the top ten views. With 3.5 kilometers
(about 2.1 miles) in length and 50 meters (about 0.03 miles) in
width, it is the political, cultural, scientific and educational
center of Zhongshan City. Xinzhong Zhuijin, means beautiful brocade,
another good name given to the road. The beautiful Sun Yat-sen
Park of Zhongshan is located on this street, attracting lots of
visitors by its variety vegetations. It is an ideal place for
you to have a rest without entrance fee.
Although it does not altogether compare with the most famous
tourist venues of China, Zhongshan has its own unique and lingering
charm. Should you wish to escape from the bustling metropolises,
don't hesitate to come here.
