a friend told me that concrete was used 4 parts of it. did they have concrete in that time period? and i was also told that soldiers bodies were used in the great wall. is that true?
Mar. 30,2009 17:41 Ms.Kiara(USA) replied:
No that is not true... The bodies were thrown into the ditches next to the wall. Not into it or you would see limbs and heads sticking out of the wall while you were walking on it... That wouldn't be very nice to see on a family vacation... LMAO
Jun. 25,2009 16:10 Mr.Pink(China) replied:
Actually, you would be hard pressed to find body parts still sticking out of the walls after 1000 - 2000 years. Bodies decay rather rapidy particularly when left exposed to the elements. It is said that workers that died were buried in the walls as they were built.

The great wall of China first started as a wall made of hard earth was made by planks being parall next to each other allow the Earth to channel up causing a wall it was very quick and simple. All that was needed to be down was for a pensant to stand on the earth and mud being shoveled into the gap between the planks by another pesant and for the pesant standing on the earth or dirt to stomp i down. This is how a part of the great wall was made in only 12 years. Alothough millions of pesants died at the great walls consturction and sadly were forced into slavery. In total 1-3 Million! pesants were killed constructing this mad made wonder.

People felt it's headache to carry large pieces of rocks or stones to the mountains, but there was no machine in ancient times. At last, they made goats, horses or oxes help carry bricks, or people stood in a line from the foot to the top of the mountain and passed the materials one by one.

Well this is a great article and yes since i am doing a project on the Great Wall i would like some info. First, what civilization built it, where it's located, how did they build it, why did they build it, can you see it today and if so what is its condition and is it being used. I also need-how long did it take to build, and what year it was built. it would be so great if i could get some good facts. and thanks so much :)
Jun. 3,2009 04:12 Mr.professor replied:
Here are the answers: The Great Wall was built by ancient Chinese people including peasants, soldiers and prisoners. They built it by piling up bricks and stones with cement on the mountains. They built it to protect the land and people to the south of the wall from being attacked by the northern nomadic tribes. The wall starts from Hushan in Liaoning and ends at Jiayuguan in Gansu. The walls can be seen today, but many sections are eroded badly beyond of recognization. It took over 2,000 years to build the wall from Spring and Autumn Period (770 BC - 476 BC) to Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644).

It is not only because of the high level of productivity of the time that hard material like bricks and stones were used in the construction of the Great Wall, but also because of the development of weapons. Before the Ming Dynasty, the Great Wall was built from board frames and, although not very solid, could withhold simple weapons like swords, spears and bows. But during the Ming Dynasty, gunpowder became available. The musket, blunderbuss and cannon appeared. Due to the use of these weapons, more solid bricks and stones were required to build a stronger Great Wall.
