Hi, This site is great help for tourists like us. I would like to know what days is the Forbidden City open? Also, what wall is closest to Chaoyang District?

Oct. 8,2009 20:55

The Forbidden City is open on Oct.3 after the National Holiday. All the wall sections are located in the suburban counties in Beijing. You can visit Badaling Great Wall for your safety concern and easy transportation.

I am planning to visit Beijing at the end of January or early February. Will the Great Wall, Forbidden City and the Terra Cotta warriors be open and available then? Thank you for your help.

Sep. 30,2009 03:44
Mr.Leo replied:

Yes, they are all open and available at the time you mentioned.

Sep. 30,2009 07:00
Mr.Perry (U.S.A.) replied:

Thanks! I can't wait to go!!

Oct. 2,2009 08:12
Mrs.Violet(USA) replied:

We just came back yesterday from China.

We saw the Terra Cotta Warriors in Xian and was fortunate enough to see the farmer (who discovered the army)sitting inside signing autographs. The Terra Cotta Warriors were very impressive. Please buy your Terra Cotta Warriors at the Government Official Gift shop inside and not the vendors outside even though it costs a fraction of the gift shop price.

The Great Wall was a very hard climb but none the less beautiful. The steps up the Great Wall varied in height, and the passage gets narrower as you ascend to the upper towers. Be prepare to sweat, wear very comfortable shoes and bring bottles of water with you.

The Forbidden City is massive. We wandered around it for hours and hours. Be especially careful of your surroundings when at the Forbidden City because our friend had his passport pick pocketed there. All the openings to the buildings are normally crowded which makes it easy pickings for them.

We also went and visited the Temple of Heaven and the Summer Palace. Everything was beautiful!

It is advised that you leave your passport locked inside your hotel when visiting the historical sites in Beijing. We were told that by our Tour Guide only after the pick pocketing experience, that passports are not needed to be shown in Beijing to get into the attractions. You will need it for Xian though.

We also walked all around the Hutongs and had snacks. We spent an entire afternoon there. Make sure you have a guide or a map since the Hutongs have many many alleyways and one can easily get lost.

Have fun and be safe!

Thanks for your reply, I will be only for 5 hours!
Can you tell me if I can visit the Grat Wall and what else I can do in a few hours?
Also if I need to hire a tour or I can do it by myself
Thanks!
Gabriela

Sep. 27,2009 20:34
Mr.Guang replied:

Five hours is too limited to visit Beijing. and your last post mentioned that you would arrive from 3pm till 8 pm. During this period of time, Forbidden City is closed, and it is too late if you go to Badaling. So I suggest you just wander on the street, take the local snacks or you can hire a rickshaw to visit hutongs in Beijing.

HI! I will ne in Beijing on 7 OCtober, from 3 PM till 8 PM
Can you reccomend me what to do as a first time visitor?
Thanks!

Sep. 26,2009 20:21
Mr.Guang replied:

How many days you will spend in Beijing? Two days are enough to visit Beijing. The first day you can visit the urban area, including Forbidden City, Summer Palace and Tiananmen Square, and enjoy the nightview and try the local snacks in the city. On the second day, go to the surburban areas, visit Badaling Great Wall and Ming Tombs.

Yes, it is too cold to hike on the Great Wall in mid-November. Sometimes it snows on the wall, and it is beautiful on the wall when it is snowing, as long as you are well prepared.

My husband and I will be visiting China (Hong Kong & Beijing)for the 1st time on Oct 1-10 for a conference, but unfortunately for only a few days in each city. Can you tell me what parts of the Great Wall we could easily visit and also, other than the typical sight-seeing spots, anything else we should concentrate on seeing? Thanks for your help!

Sep. 16,2009 22:42
Ms.Linda replied:

In beijing, you are suggested to visit Badaling Great Wall for easy transportation since your time is limited in beijing, and besides, you can hire a rickshaw to see the hutongs (alley) in beijing, and eat snacks in Wangfujing food street in the evening. There are so many delicious and local food that you may be interested. In Hong Kong, visit Ocean Park and Victoria Peak, and enjoy the harbor view. The nightview of Hongkong is beautiful, quite worth seeing. Good trip!

Was told that Mutianyu scenery is very nice in autumn. Is it possible to visit Mutianyu section & Ming Tombs in 1day? Can I travel by bus or taxi? Is there any official 1day tour that covers Mutianyu & Ming tombs? Thank you.

Sep. 7,2009 23:08
Mr.Leo replied:

Hi, Mutianyu is indeed very beautiful in autumn. Mutianyu and Ming tombs are located in two opposite directions. Time is very limited if you would like to visit them in one day. You'd better visit Mutianyu and Ming Tombs in two days.

Many people would visit Badaling and Ming tombs in one day for they are located quite near and the transportation is easy.

Sep. 14,2009 22:43
Ms.Jade replied:

Mr.Leo. Do you know of any tour agent that organise any 1day tour for Mutianyu & Ming tombs at reasonable price? Thank you.

Sep. 15,2009 02:24
Mr.Leo replied:

Hi, Ms.Jade, I once booked a tour through this website TravelChinaGuide.com. It is a tour of Badaling and Ming tombs. The price is reasonable and all is arranged perfect. You can have a try. I choice a private tour because I prefer free time travel and go alone. And you can also join a bus tour which you go with other visitors, share the same car and tour guide. The price is cheaper. You can have a try.

Sep. 15,2009 23:08
Ms.Jade replied:

Mr.Leo. How much was your tour with TCG? Thanks.

Sep. 16,2009 01:49
Mr.Leo replied:

Sorry I cannot remember it clearly, Ms.Jade, it is almost five years ago, and mine is a little bit different from yours, I go to Badaling and Ming Tombs, so I've know idea about the price of Mutianyu and Ming Tombs. You can call TCG and they will tell you the exact price according to your travel plan.

On 25 December this year I have a 14 hour stopover in Beijing.
It that enough time to see The Great Wall and the Forbidden City? Given that I am on a budget what is the best way to get around?

Also, what is the weather like around this time?

Thanks

Aug. 22,2009 20:15
Ms.Hannah(China) replied:

You will be very pressed for time if visit the Great Wall and Forbidden City in 14 hours. So you should choose one of them to make a visit.

Since you said you will go to Beijing on 25 December, the weather around this time in Beijing is extrmely cold. So I suggest you to visit Forbidden City. Because it is located in the downtown Beijing and the transportation is very easy. You'd better visit Great Wall in spring and autumn, because it is unbearably cold on Great Wall in december.

Aug. 15,2009 20:49
Mr.Eric replied:

Hi, Mr.jeffrey, the great wall of china is located in Beijing not in Shenzhen. So you should take a flight or train from Shenzhen to Beijing. There is no bus from shenzhen to beijing, for the distance is too big.

Aug. 16,2009 18:27
Mr.Jeffrey(Thailand) replied:

THANKS FOR THAT MR. ERIC. MY FRIEND WANTS TO TAKE A BS GOING TO BEIJING TO WITNESS THE BEAUTY OF CHINA BY BUS, can you suggest best way possible to get onto the bus? shenzhen to kunming, possible?then head from kunming to beijing? how much would it cost by train or air from Shenzhen to beijing? tnz for the big help! highly appreciated! gd day!

Aug. 16,2009 19:51
Mr.Eric replied:

Hi, Mr. Jeffrey, the best way to witness the beauty of China from Shenzhen to Beijing is to travel by train. The train no.K106 and T108 will take you directly from Shenzhen to Beijing West Station. The tickets of the two trains is sold at the same price. For hard seat, the tickets costs CNY 257, for middle hard berth, it costs CNY 452, and for lower soft berth, it costs CNY 720. The prices are listed for your reference. Or you can take a flight, but it is a pity that you can not see the landview by plane. And by bus, forget it, it is too long and not safe, so take a train and good trip!

Aug. 17,2009 18:37
Mr.jeffrey(Thailand) replied:

wow, great help then mr. eric! tnx a lot for this very useful information. we will be in shenzhen this coming Oct.17 and probably staying there for 1 day and go directly to beijing. any accommodation (guesthouses) at shenzhen and beijing/ tnx..great help!cheers!

Aug. 17,2009 20:34
Mr.Eric replied:

You are welcome, Mr.jeffrey. For the hotels, I think Motel 168 of Hongling Road, Shenzhen will be a good choice. It is a budget hotel with clean and large rooms and friendly and helpful staffs.

In Beijing, you can stay at Beijing City Central Youth Hostel located in No. 1, Beijingzhanqianjie, Dongcheng District,Beijing. It is a member of Hostelling International and the largest and highest standard hostel in Beijing. What's more important, the price is rather reasonable. But of course, it is up to you. My advice is only a reference. Nice trip!

It takes at least a half day to visit Great Wall of China (suggest it is Badaling Great Wall). Where will you book a room? In Beijing, or around Badaling? Around Badaling, there are many houses and it probably charges CNY 60 for a room for one night, not very expensive.

Which wall would be best to visit February 24? I visited Badaling last year end of March and it was snowing and sleeting. My husband is coming with me this year and would love to see the Wall. A friend said there were sections that were at lower altitude. Does anyone know?? Are the cable cars running in Feb?

Thanks

Jul. 25,2009 20:26

Since you have visited Badaling last year, so this year you can visit Mutianyu Great Wall. On February 24, it would be snowing on the wall. But the snow scenery is equally beautiful. The cable cars run in Feb.

I want to go to China to walk all the great chinese wall. How many days would it take to see it completetly? Is there any place near the wall that I can go to eat while I walk? Is it safe to walk the great chinese wall? Is there any other option to visit it complete that is easier than walking? Thanks for your help!

Jul. 14,2009 01:11
Ms.White replied:

The China Great Wall extends from the Hushan Great Wall in Liaoning to Jiayuguan Pass in Gansu. It takes about two years to finish walking all the great chinese wall. Here I think you mean the walk of some sections of the Great Wall, right? The developed sections such as Badaling and Mutianyu are safe to walk. But the wild sections such as Jiankou, Jinshanling and Simatai is not very safe, you should be very careful for every step. These sections are suitable for adventure. And there are vendors who will sell you water and food, but they are asking at pretty high prices. So I suggest you prepare enough food and water by yourself. Besides walking, you can take a cable car or slide to visit the wall, it will save your enery and the scenery from top is great!

Can you please help me on which section I choose among so many walls in Beijing? I will come to Beijing in August and plan to have one day visit on the wall.

Jun. 21,2009 01:25
Mr.Springfield replied:

Hi, Badaling is the most famous one, but also with most people. Mutianyu is less famous and less grand than Badaling, but has fewer visitors and the view is good in autumn. Jinshanling, Simatai and Jiankou are wild walls beyond repair. They are dangerous but suitable for experienced hikers. So you can choose from your liking, energy and time.
