Kunming MapKunming, capital of Yunnan Province, with a history of more than 2400 years, owes its importance to the fact that it was the gateway to the celebrated Silk Road that facilitated trade with Tibet, Sichuan, Myanmar and India. Today the city is the political, economical and cultural center of Yunnan and the provincial center for transport, science and technology and consequently has become the most popular center for tourism in Southwest China.

Kunming enjoys a pleasant climate and does its best to live up to its title of 'the City of Eternal Spring'. Whenever you are planning to go, the temperature is always pleasant. With its convenient transport links in and out of the city, Kunming welcomes and sees off tens of thousands of tourists every day.

Qingnian Lu, Zhengyi Lu, and Renmin Lu are the main commercial areas in Kunming; the most popular pedestrian streets are Nanping Jie, Jingxing Huaniao Shichang, and Jinma Biji Fang.

The ethnic minorityKunming is the focal point of Yunnan minority culture. Some 26 ethnic minorities such as Yi, Bai, Miao, Dai, Hani and more inhabit the region. Each group has its own featured festivals such as the Torch festival of Yi people, the Golden Temple Fair and so on. The hugely successful 1999 International Horticultural Exposition enhanced Kunming's influence in the world resulting in a snowball effect upon tourism as more and more foreigners come to discover this enchanting part of China.

I'M PLANNING TO DRIVE FROM BANGKOK TO KUNMING USING MY PERSONAL VEHICLE, IT HAS THAI DIPLOMATIC PLATES AS I WORK FOR THE US EMBASSY. OTHER THAN A VISA FOR MY ENTRANCE, SHOULD THE BLUE BOOK BE ENOUGH TO CLEAR CUSTOMS? IF NOT WHAT DOCUMENTS DO I NEED?
THANKS!

Mr.Lee replied:

If you would like to travel by your own vehicle, you need to get an approved document from National Tourism Administration of PRC. This will be somewhat complicated especially for you hold diplomatic passport. My suggestion is that please contact an internationl travel agent in Bangkok for help.

1) How many days we should spend in Kunming? Dali? and Lijiang?
2) What is the best routing: Kunming --> Dali then Lijiang or Kunming - Lijiang then Dali?
3) What is the best way from Kunming to Dali and Lijiang? by bus, train or airplane?

FYI, our main purpose is to visit the natural and historic scenes and taking photos (both of us are amateur photographers)

Hope to hear from you soon.

From Kunming, you could take a bus at Kunming East Bus Station to reach the Stone Forest in 1.5 hours. The bus fare is CNY25.

To Dali, you could take a flight, train or bus from Kunming to arrive. From Dali to Lijiang, you could take train or bus. And finally, take a bus from Dali to Shangri-la. Well, it is suggested that you read this website's introduction on these three cities' transportation firstly.
