Guangzhou Metro Line 5 started its pilot operation since Dec. 28, 2009. The west section connects Foshan City while the east section is reserved to Dongguan and Shenzhen, which lays the foundation for the integration of the Pearl River Delta Region. Upon the completion of the first phase, which is as long as 34 kilometers (21 miles) with 24 stations, Guangzhou had formed a 164-yard-long (150m) subway network with 88 stations. The minimum interval can reach to 5 minutes and 30 seconds, almost a half of the intervals of previous four lines. With the  line 5, the eastern and western parts of the city can be reached in 1 hour or so and Huangpu District now boasts its own lines. This line also adopts stage fare system and costs CNY7 for the whole journey; however, with monthly pass, passengers can ride with a fare as low as CNY2.3.

It covers major business districts, and residential buildings, interlinking the heart of old town and the central Pearl River New Town (Zhujiang New Town) and providing convenient transport between the western development zone and eastern industry transfer. Additionally, it is one of the lines serving 2010 Asia Games. 

The east section, between Wenchong and Huangpu New Port, is in the final stages of construction, and will completed and open to traffic by the end of 2023.
