Hakka Food in Hong Kong

Hakka people mainly inhabit in Southern China, such as Jiangxi, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Sichuan, Hunan, Hong Kong and Macau. Actually, the Hakkas’ descendents are the Han people from the Han Dynasty. Originally, they lived in the Central Plains of China (Central Plains is the Henan Province and the wider area, the Yellow River Basin.). However, because of wars, famine and government rewards or punishment, some of them were forced to leave the Central Plains and move to Southern China.

Hakka people have their own dialect, which has many characteristics as those of ancient Chinese. Hakka people also have their own cuisine. For instance, Hakka-style Braised Pork with Preserved Vegetables, Hakka-style Salt Baked Chicke and Poon Choi are well known dishes. In Hong Kong, you can find many Hakka villages in Yuen Long of the New Territories. So if you want to taste very traditional Hakka food, you can visit Yuen Long first.
