I am planning a trip to Yunnan in January. Is it practical to go to Shangrila / Zhongdian at that time of the year? Are roads passable, and are places like the Songzanlin temple open?

Aug. 10,2009 03:18
Mr.Jason replied:

Yes, it is practical. Winter is a best season to see the snow mountains there, though Meli Snow Mountain will not allowed to climb in. The temple is open. You can take bus from Lijiang/Dali to Zhongdian. The average temperature is about 6C. Keep warm, for the altitude there is high.

Sep. 16,2009 21:39
Mr.Liu(China) replied:

It depends on weather. The temperature of Shangrila in January will be very cold, about 10 centigrades below zero.So you need some warm clothes and shoes, and the traffic might be blocked by heavy snow. The Songzanlin Temple is always open, you can visit it at any time you like.

My family of 5 is planning a trip to Kunming->Lijiang->Shangrila->Dali-Kunming for about 10 days this Dec. We're on a tight budget. Can anyone advises if it's more cost effective to take public transport (bus, train etc) to places of interests or is it cheaper to join local tour? What are the not to be missed places to visit?

Sep. 7,2009 03:09
Mr.bob(usa) replied:

Hi, actually jion a tour is cheaper and you will not miss the most important place.
But you are advised to join a tour offered by a big travel agency as the local small travel agency will make a lot of hidden charges. At least, i do not believe them at all.
Personally speaking, tcg is rather good. I have booked a tour before, good service and knowlageble tour guide.
Have a good day in china.

Sep. 16,2009 00:11
Mr.Liu(China) replied:

Hi,Mrs Lee.I'm Chinese and have been living in Yunnan for 24years so I think I can give you some useful advices.First, the itinerary you planned is very good, but the altitude of Shangrila is very high and the weather will be very cold,so you must take some warm clothes.(The temperature will be 10 to 15 degrees below zero.)Second,I think Dali is better than Lijiang and Kunming because Ljjiang is always full of visitors and the traffic conditions in Kunming is terrible. At last I will say that the cost of traffic could be very high or very low,it mainly depends on your choice. The ticket of airplane between Kunming and Dali is about 750 yuan, and the ticket of bus is only 200 uan.You can also take a small bus of local driver's,it will be more convenient for your trip.

Hello... I've seen beautiful pictures of Yunnan and am keen to go this October for 7 nights. Can you suggest an itinerary (our budget is not too restrictive).
Our thoughts were,
- 1 overnight day in Kunming (from HK). Is stone forest worth a visit in the short time frame?
- fly to dali (or train?) and spend 2 nights
- Bus/train to lijiang for 2 nights
- Bus to Zhongdian for 2 nights

I'll be honest and don't know THE places to go to/see. Are day tours convenient to join in each place? Is non-Mandarin speaking a problem?

Many thanks for your advice!

Ryan

Ms.Dora replied:

Hi, Mr Ryan,
You can refer to this to arrange your itinerary:
http://www.travelchinaguide.com/package/kunming.htm

Stone forest is close to the city proper of Kunming. You can spend half a day there. Easy to find a one-day tour there, so as a english tour. :-)

Sep. 15,2009 13:07
Mr.Liu(China) replied:

I'm glad of your visiting,Mr Ryan.I'm living in Kunming and here is my suggestions and answers to your questions:

-I suggest that you'd better spend a whole day in Kunming because it has a lot of beautiful places that worth to visit. But I don't think stone forest is worth to visit in the short time frame, its ticket is too expensive.(200 yuan,or 17.6 for each)

-It only needs about 40 minutes if you decided flying to dali,or 6-8 hours if you took a bus or train.Of course, fly to dali means more expenses,50-55 for each.

-It will take you 2 hours from dali to lijiang by bus.The railway between dali and lijiang has been built on Sept 4th.But i don't know when we can take train to lijiang.

-The traveling route between lijiang and zhongdian is about 200kilometres long, and it will take 3 hours to arrive there by bus.

-7 days is enough for your journey, but I think 9-10days would be better. And non-Mandain speaking is really a problem even for chinese people from other provinces,so you'd better employ a local guide.

Contact me at:hliu.1985@gmail.com if you had more questions.

Wish you had a happy journey in Yunnan!

Hi could anyone give me recommendations for the southern part of yunnan? Planning to go to xishuangbana, want to see the elephant valley and the single tree forest. How can i book a a cabin in trees for the elephant valley? Furthermore, is there some information for menghai? I heard it should be great, but i have no idea where to go and what to do there, because of lack of information on the internet :( I would have 7 days to stay... probably its too much^^ thx david

Sep. 2,2009 02:45
Mr.Sandy replied:

To stay one night in the cabin in treet seems not comfortable. You can watch elephents there, but do not recommend to live in it. Menghai is a production area of Puer tea. You can visit the tea garden. Menghai also has a pass to Burma.

Hi, you could stay at a home hostel just located in the ancient city. The price is reasonable and you could walk around the city at any time. Except of peak tourims season, you could find one hostel easily when you arrive there.

Hi Mr Bai;

Thanks for your reply, your note really helpfull !Can you tell me , by coach how many hours from Xichang to Luku lake ?

Jul. 25,2009 04:38
Mr.Bai replied:

6-8hrs.there is one bus starting from Xichang at 8:30 directly to Lugu Lake and the tickets will cost you 74 yuan.you`d better take some medicine in case of carsickness, for some parts of the road are not so good.but anyway the sceneries along the way are extremely beautiful.i have heard that there is one more bus line opened up from Xichang to Lijiang directly in 2008and the bus usually stops at Lugu Lake,im not quite sure about it.check it when you are in Xichang.

Jul. 24,2009 13:06
Mr.Bai replied:

there is no direct transportion from Xichang to Dali.what Norman told is actually the only option you have if you wanna start from Xichang.

Hi Norman;

Thanks for your helpfull reply ! If i travel from Xichang to Dali, what is the distance and how long it will take ? Is there any flight from Shangrila to Kunming ? What is is bookin web ? I tried to book China local flight online, many times it can't do so. Should you have the schedule pls tell me , i intend to fly from Diqing air port Shnagrila to Kunming on 20th Aug 09. Your kind attention is much appreciated.

Jul. 20,2009 02:20
Mr.Norman replied:

To Mr Wan
So, you are changing your travel plan. There is no direcct bus route from Xichand to Dali. Xichang bus Station only have one bus a day at 8:30am to Lugu Lake. It needs 7-8 hours. Lugu Lake is 5-6 hours from Lijiang and Lijiang is 3-4 hours to Dali. You make me puzzled about your route, and that is a route for your reference. Yes, Shangri-La has flights to Kunming. You can see the web of China Eastern Airlines. Flight at Diqing departing at 8:40, 8:50, 8:55, 9:55 and 21:20. Please confirm that when you book the ticket. :-)

Jul. 18,2009 21:47
Mr.Norman replied:

Hello, Mr simon Wan. There is not flighs available to both Lijiang and Shangri-La. The best way is to go by bus. There is one direct bus from Xichang Bus Station to Lijiang, if you miss it, you can make a transfer at Panzhihua (or by train to Panzhihua).

You mean fives at Seoul and Kunming? It is possible. As I know there are direct flight from Seoul to Kunming, but only four flights a week. Mu2003, KE886. You can check them. Does the price you mean refers to as the flight cost? Suggest you check a few days before leaving. It should be more than 3500rmb, single trip.

A new airport in Tengchong County in Yunan Province was officially inaugurated on February 16. It will be of great convenience for travelers to explore the beautiful countryside scenes, shortening the journey time between Kunming and Tengchong from ten hours to fifty minutes. Tenchong Airport is located ten miles in south of Kunming.
