I'm planning to visit Kuming in Dec. What's the best way to travel from Kuming to Lijiang. How much will it cost to take bus or fly? What's the weather like in Lijiang and I'm planning to visit the Snow Mountain in Lijiang.

Oct. 11,2009 04:30
Mr.Shan replied:

It is suggested that you take a flight from Kunming to Lijiang, which only takes 45 minutes. The long-distance bus will take you about 8 hours.

Winter is not very cold in Lijiang. You could wear a thin sweater woolen coat warm jeans there. Please prepare a down jacket for your visit to the snow mountain. You could rent a down jacket at the foot of the mountain. Tips, there is no heating-system in these hotels of Lijiang, so please keep you warm at night.

Hello,
I found some valuable information about Yunnan on this site already, esp. about transportation from Kunming to the south.
I intend to travel from Kunming to Yuanyang with a stopover in Jianshui.

I would like to go on from Yuanyang to Jinghong (and to Laos from there).
How can I get from Yuanyang to Jinghong by bus?
Thanks for your suggestions.

Oct. 11,2009 04:18
Mr.Shan replied:

The journey will take you about 2 days from Yuanyang to Jinghong by bus, via Liushui and Mengla. So, it is suggested that you return to Kunming and then take a flight (45 minutes) or bus (9 hours)to Jinghong. The distance between Kunming and Jinghong is about 700kms~

Thank you, Mr. Liu, for your reply. Is it hard to find apartments in Kunming with western toilets? How much does the average apartment (2 bedroom, 1 bath) cost monthly?

Sep. 28,2009 20:53
Mr.Frank replied:

I think most of the newly built apartments are equipped with western standard toilets already. So, please take it easy! As for the price, it is decided by the apartment's location and the decoration, so the rent will be different.

My husband and I are considering moving to China. We are interested in schools that teach Mandarin. How can we best find a good school in Kunming? And what time of year is the best time to move to this area?

Sep. 18,2009 23:10
Mr.Liu(China) replied:

Hi,Ms.Faye.
I'm Chinese and have been living in Kunming for 24 years. So I think I can give you some good suggestions about living in Kunming. Here is my suggestions:

Language school-I'm not sure that if there was a language school which teaches foreigners to speak Mandarin in Kunming. But I will search one for you in my free time, and I will tell you the answer later. If I coudn't find one I think I can be a teacher if you wish.I used to teach Mandarin when I was studying in Peking University.

Proper time moving to Kunming-It depends on season. In spring(Feb to Apr)the weather is warm and dry.The precipitation is low and the wind is powerful. In summer(May to Aug) the weather is hot(about 28~30 centigrades in the day and 16~19 centigrades in the night)in sunny days and cool(sometimes a little cold)in rainy days. But in summer it rains a lot so the weather is cool in most of times. In Autumn(Sept to Nov)the weather is cool and the precipitation decreases quickly,so I think it's the best time for travelers to come to Kunming. And in winter the weather is warm in sunny days(7~10 centigrades in the night and 18~20 centigrades in the day)but a little cold in rainy days. The temperature will be less than 5 centigrades in the night and 10 centigrades in the day.Luckily,in winter the precipitation is very low,so the cold days will be very limited.

Wish you have a pleasant journey in Kunming!

Hi, can anyone advises if it's easy to travel in Kunming, Lijiang? Intend to be there end Dec with family of 5 on tight budget. What about the weather then? Thanks very much for your advice!

Sep. 18,2009 03:04
Ms.Dora replied:

Yes, it is easy to travel there. Lijiang is easy to be reached from Kunming, either. The temperature is 5-20C if it is sunny. May be colder if it snows. Need to wear sweater and overcoat. If you want to visit the snow mountain, need to wear heavy down coat. Kunming is warmer.

Sep. 18,2009 10:09
Mr.Ho(Singapore) replied:

I was there in July (2 months ago). It is easy to move around in kunming and lijiang. Weather was pleasant then. Anyway, Kunming is supposed to be the city of spring always!

Thank you for your website, and your kindness in answering travelers questions!

my college age daughter will be traveling to Kunming from a coastal city in China after having spent a few months there already. She is sufficient in her language skills to get around with few problems, but I as her mother worry about the 'what ifs'...so here's my question: what options to university age students from the US have if trouble arises while they are there. I note there is no U.S. embassy in Kunming. Does the U. S. government have any kind of office there? How about the Canadian or British governments? A somewhat concerned mother

Aug. 13,2009 21:17
Mr.Johnson (US) replied:

Well, not very sure about the situation in Kunming. But the university in Xi'an, where I'm studying, has a considerate policy for foreign students, incluing studying and daily life. Everything is easy and security. So, no need to worry about too much!

Sep. 15,2009 23:56
Mr.Liu(China) replied:

I'm sorry, but I think there is no government offices of European or American countries in Kunming.

Hi
Planning to travel from kunming to lijiang in early nov with 3 yr old. Wanting to know if flights purchased in kunming for cash on the day are still available and significantly cheaper than pre booking? Also what are the train and bus journeys like, suitable for travel with kids? Also what kind of weather to expect in Lijiang in early Nov?

Cheers and many thanks

Aug. 31,2009 22:48
Mr.Shan replied:

You'd better book the ticket in advance. Usually, you could just purchase the full-price ticket on the day leaving. Currently, only bus and flight are available between Kunming and Lijiang. Not suggested taking a bus which is uncomfortable and takes long time.

The weather should be very comfortable in early Nov. But, please some warm clothes for the kids in early morning. Of course, some warm clothes for you all if you visit the snow mountain.

Sep. 15,2009 13:16
Mr.Liu(China) replied:

I suggest you book the ticket 2-3 weeks before your trip for more discount. It will save 200-300yuan or 17-25 for each ticket. The weather of Kunming and Lijiang is very comfortable in Nov.But the temperature indoors would be a little cool so you'd better take some warm clothes for your kids.

US citizen with a multiple entry visitor's visa and therefore must exit china once monthly.

Which countries (Vietnam? Laos? Thailand? other?) are most convenient for Kunming-entry to foreign country-back to Kunming "visa run"?

About how much $$$ must one spend to leave Kunming, exit China, and return?

How many days does this require?

Aug. 10,2009 02:20
Mr.Sandy replied:

Hi, Mr Humes. Yunan has border customs with Vietnam, Laos and Thailand. It seems the Hekou Boder to Vietnam is more convenient. It can be reached from Kunming in 5 hours. You can handle the visa in Kunming and the visa fee varies. It costs more if you want it in shorter time. Nearly 200RMB if you do not have problem on time requested, 3-5 working days.
