Several attractions are not in the city center, but around the city. Take it for reference: http://www.travelchinaguide.com/attraction/xinjiang/urumqi/ As the tour, you can think about this: http://www.travelchinaguide.com/package/urumqi.htm
Do not forget to tase the food while visiting there. Enjoy :)

Hello, I would like to visit Urumqi and the surroundings at the end of May. I am wondering whether it's worth the 5 hour plane from Shanghai for only 3 to 4 days there. Also will the weather be warm enough? Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks.
May. 5,2009 22:23 Ms.Jennifer replied:
Yes, it is worthwhile to take a plane. It will be a long journey if you take trains, 45.5 hours. It is a waste of time, and the ticket price is over 1000 yuan for soft sleeper. As to the weather, it is above 20C. Take a light coat with you. It may windy sometimes. Tips for you, it is two hours after Beijing time. People get to work at 10am and have lunch at 2pm and supper at 8.9pm. Foods will be weighed in kilogram. Enjoy! I want to be there someday too.

We adopted an adorable baby girl from Urumqi. Our luck was not great as we arrived with rain, the airport was not clean. Luckily we had a guide waiting for us with a van to take us to our Hoi Tak Hotel. The staff was nice, espeically the hostess at the breakfast buffet. It took us nearly 3 days before they realized we needed a high chair for our new daughter. We spent 6 days in the motel. Their heated pool was laughable. They require everyone to wear swimcaps (but we are in new country = new rules). All in all, I did like the hotel, the staff and with the minor problems, I enjoyed the stay. I just hope next time, the weather would be better so I could see the sights.

Why did you not tell me about Aviation Hotel? It is ideal for those people who are just passing through, and it has a free shuttle. If I had known about Aviation Hotel, I would not have had to wait for 15 minutes for a taxi at Tunhe Hotel, and I would not have gotten there too late for check-in, and I would not have had to pay $500 more for two more tickets to Wuhan. I only learned about this hotel after missing the plane to Wuhan and asking China Southern to book a hotel for me. They at least did that much for me.
P.S. This is my second message to you. The first was quite wordy.
Hi Jeanette, I have posted my own notice but I just thought I would tell you I stayed one night at Aviation Hotel (a lady taxi driver took me there) and it was really good - free shuttle bus as you say and so close to the airport you can walk if you want to. Regards, Mike.

What can I say about Urumqi? It is a very busy major city full of crowds and street traders and multi storey buildings. Even the pavements have cars and taxis on them. I went in mid winter when it was bitterly cold. It is a really imteresting place with excellent shops and markets and I have met some lovely friendly people who I would love to see again. I als stayed in a superb hotel which I would recommend to anyone and I learned to ski at the Silk Road International Ski Resort.

Our experiences in Urumqi were NOT satisfactory. Both times we passed thru Urumqi, we encountered a nightmare in dealing with gypsy drivers and even legitimate taxi drivers. The first time there, a man grabbed our luggage and was taking it to his car before even negotiating a price. When I said, "SanShi Kuai," he and his companions laughed. We went to a meter cab, and he asked us for 60 yuan. That night, at the Tunhe Hotel, I awoke shivering from the cold so bad I couldn't sleep. Although they turned on the heat, I felt ill the next morning, so it took us a little longer to get ready. We had to wait 15 minutes for the taxi, which put us at the airport 35 minutes before takeoff. The ground agents made us pay another $500.00 for new tickets to Wuhan. At least, I had a day to rest before continuing the journey. In Wuhan, we paid $363 for overweight baggage, and when we got to Urumqi, we had to pay another $515! The travel agent told me I would only have to pay once. The "International Airport" in Urumqi has a small lobby where everyone must wait until it is time to begin checking in. There is no place to sit except in the "coffee shop" where everything is three times as much as a regular supermarket. And they don't want you to sit down unless you buy something. We had a two-hour wait, so we bought some water (10 yuan) and crackers (10 yuan). Everything was very expensive. When they finally opened check-in, we had to go through "Quarantine", where we showed our passports and put our bags on a conveyor belt. Then we had to show our passports at two more checkpoints. We didn't know we had to have an Exit Form, and the counter has no sign. We showed our passports four times and ran our bags through security three times. I am very pleased with Mirage Hotel. I am very displeased with Urumqi drivers and airport service, and I am very displeased with Urumqi China Southern. They have taken customer service to a new low.

i WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO VISIT Urumqiin May of this year. It is a very clean, beautiful city and the silk road museum there is one of the better museums of the world. It reminded me a lot of Miami although one is on the ocean and the other inland - both cities are congregating places for peoples from all over the world and I like a cosmopolitan atmosphere. I wish it was not half way around the world from where I live since I would love to go back. Best regards, Susanna Beutler
