Hi, Ms.Monica, There are many foreign tourists who are DIY- travelling in China. Many Chinese can speak a little English, so you would find it not difficult to communicate with the locals. I will be in Hong Kong during January, 2001, then must get to Beijing early February. I can make connecting air flights in Xian only to SEE Terracotta Warriers. If so I will need someone to meet me, take me to see, that's SEE,them and return to the airport for my connecting flight. It is the only way I know to "see" the site before reurning to India on business. I do NOT want a detailed long-winded tour. I do not want to get involved in too many details. In and out, so to speak. Thank you.
Mr.g.Laucer, you will arrive in Xi'an during January,2010, won't you? You can take a taxi from Xi'an airport to the Terra Cotta directly. It's OK just pay the taxi driver 300 yuan for a single trip and the same amount of money when you come back to the airport. This may be the best and fatest way.

Dear friends,
Having read your excellent advice, I'd like to ask you how you'd proceed in my situation. I will be in China from October 13 to October 25, and I want to visit Beijing, Shanghai and Xi'An. I have already been to Beijing for professional reasons in the past, so I've already (barely) visited something (Forbidden City, Tian'an'men square).
How would you divide your time? Maybe 3 days in Beijing, 3 in Xi'An and 5-6 in Shanghai (also visiting Nanjing, etc.)? What's the best route in your opinion? First Beijing, then Xi'An and finally Shanghai? Or maybe it's better finishing it with Xi'An?
Thanks for your advice! :)
Aug. 26,2009 19:33 Mr.Zhang(China) replied:
China is too big for a foreigner to understand. So I sugget that you shoud spend 3 days separately in Beingjing and Xi'an, and then 1 day in Shanghai, and then the same length of time in Nanjing and Suzhou. Fianally, you'd better go to Chengdu and visit the Biggest Budder Statue for 3days.
Aug. 27,2009 01:38 Mr.Pont(Spain) replied:
Thank you, Mr. Zhang. I am sure I won't understand much of your big, beautiful country in just 2 weeks, but I really do plan to come again in the future and maybe spend 2 or 3 months in China.
As for now, I guess I will concentrate on these 3 cities, adding Nanjing and Suzhou, as they are close to Shanghai, where I'll have a free appartment for 5-6 days :)
Aug. 27,2009 19:51 Mr.Zhang(China) replied:
Mr.Pont, you're welcome. I'm not sure whether there are international air line from Xi'an to Europe. However, there are international ones in both Beijing and Shanghai. So it is more convenient to finish your Chinese trip in Shanghai.

Thank you.

Ms.ANDY2008 replied:

Mr.Zhang(China) replied:
China is too big for a foreigner to understand. So I sugget that you shoud spend 3 days separately in Beingjing and Xi'an, and then 1 day in Shanghai, and then the same length of time in Nanjing and Suzhou. Fianally, you'd better go to Chengdu and visit the Biggest Budder Statue for 3days.
Aug. 27,2009 01:38
Mr.Pont(Spain) replied:
Thank you, Mr. Zhang. I am sure I won't understand much of your big, beautiful country in just 2 weeks, but I really do plan to come again in the future and maybe spend 2 or 3 months in China.
As for now, I guess I will concentrate on these 3 cities, adding Nanjing and Suzhou, as they are close to Shanghai, where I'll have a free appartment for 5-6 days :)
Aug. 27,2009 19:51
Mr.Zhang(China) replied:
Mr.Pont, you're welcome. I'm not sure whether there are international air line from Xi'an to Europe. However, there are international ones in both Beijing and Shanghai. So it is more convenient to finish your Chinese trip in Shanghai.

Xian boats many schools. There are a lot of foreigners there. Besides official schools, there are many private schools and laguage training schools. You can find a large number of students there. In my opinion, Xian would be better. This city once was a famous ancient capital of many dynasties. I bet you would love it deeply.

In Xi'an, it is much easier to find someone who can speak English. If you can speak Eglish, it is better. however, if you can only speak Genmany, you'd better go to the Xi'an Foreign Language University for help.

Ni Hao,third leg of my adventure, is 3 days enough time to see terre-catta museum, Banpo Museum, Wild Goose Pagodas, Bell Towers and Great Mosque and other sites? What is a nice "off the Path" dinning or small garden where people "hang out" just to sit and relax? (sept is travel time).
Aug. 13,2009 21:28
Ms.Lily replied:
Yes, you could visit all of these places in 3 days. As for dining, please go to the Muslim Street for snacks at the back of the Drum Tower. For garden, you may go to these parks for free along the City Wall at night. Some locals will spend their night time there, singing and dancing.

I will be catching overnight train from Beijing to Xian and plan to spend 1 night in Xian. The next day I wish to travel to Hong Kong. What is the best way to get to Hong Kong? Can I catch train? I don't need to arrive in HK until the following day at latest, so time is not a problem. If no train, then what airlines fly from Xian to HK?
Thank you
Aug. 9,2009 20:52
Mr.Wang replied:
No, direct train from Xian to Hong Kong. It is possible if you departing from Beijing, or you should get to Zhengzhou, Wuchang (in Wuhan), Changsha or Guangzhou first, then shift to trains to Hong Kong. The easiest way from Xian to Hong Kong is traveling by air. There are direct flights: MU203 by China Eastern Airlines 14:50-17:40; CX6885 by Cathay Pacific Airways 19:45-22:40

Hi there - My husband & I are planning on a trip to China around 17-Sep-09. From my little bit research, I gathered that I should be taking a train from Hong Kong to Guangzhou and then to Xian (without spending overnight in Guangzhou). Then, we would be spending 3 nights in Xian before taking a train to Beijing. I have a few questions - How much does it cost to get a local tour guide in Xian and Beijing (for our Great Wall of China trip)? We do not speak Mandarin or Cantonese - are tour guides advisable then? I have been to Beijing several times before but my friend was living there, so I never had to travel on my own in the city.
Aug. 4,2009 04:07
Mr.lina(cn) replied:
Actually the cost of hiring a local tour guide is high. You can follow a tour. A good travel agecy can offer you experienced guide who will make your trip much more easier.
