Hi,

I read it in a guide book that foreigners need a permit to visit or stay overnight at Xidi and Hongcun. If it's true where and how can I get a permit?

Thank you,

Mr.Jamie replied:

I have never heard of this. Foreigners only need a permit to enter Tibet. That is not true.

Hi all,I will be in Hangzhou with my family in Jan for 8 days.Is it too cold to go to Huangshan that time? Is the cablecar still in operation then and is it safe to go up by cablecar during mid winter? Which mid range hotel can you recommend up the hill or in Tunxi etc?Thank you.

Aug. 31,2009 03:54
Mr.rita(cn) replied:

Hi, actually, to visit huangshan in winter is a good choice. You will not feel cold while climbing. When you finish your climbing, the hotels all provide air-conditioner and you won't feel cod either.
It is safe to take a cablecar then. There are a lot of hotels in the root of huang shan for you to choose!
Good ahead and have a good time in China

Aug. 22,2009 05:07
Mr.John replied:

here are three options for your reference:
1. by air, 40 minutes, CNY 460;
2. by train, 11 hours , CNY 130 - 170 for a hard sleeper;
3. by bus, 5 hours, CNY 100;
By bus is a wise choice I think~

Hi,

In September I am traveling from Huangshan to Wudangshan (Yishan). There are no direct trains but I have found out that there is a train from Yingtan at 21:34 (arriving to Wudangshan at 12:31. How can I get from Huangshan to Yingtan to catch this train? Is there a bus service there?
Thank you in advance,

Aug. 5,2009 22:18
Mr.Paul replied:

Are you sure about the train? Coz I do not find the info from Yingtan to Wudangshan (in Shiyan, Hubei Province, right?). You can take train from Huangshan to Yingtan. There are direct trains between them. People usually choose to go by train.

Ms.Jolan(Canada) replied:

Hi Paul,

Thank you for the information. However, I have changed my itinerary and I will travel from Huangshan to Hangzhou. I read about that there is regular bus service to Hangzhou but I do not know when the last bus leaves from Huangshan. Could you give me any info on this

Thanks for the valuable information in this website. If i may ask few questions before departing to Huangshan this month end.

1) If i would travel from Shanghai to Tangkou by bus in the morning, and take the cable car on the same day to mountain top, do i have enough time for the sunset?

2) Is there any bus from Shanghai to Taiping Telpher stop because i was told that the cable car there is less crowded and the scenery is better (i.e. West Sea Canyon)?

Thanks again.

Aug. 5,2009 22:37
Ms.Dora replied:

Hello, Mr Song.
1. It seems to have two buses in the morning at Shanghai South Railway Station to Tangkou. One is over 6am and another is 10pm. It needs 5-6 hours from Shanghai to Huangshan, and the cable way may cost 25 minutes. So, suggest you take the earlier one. Shanghai Bus Terminal has bus to Taiping, but it is partly through expressway, which will need more time.
2. The express bus will pass Hangzhou, Tunxi, Tangkou and Taiping. Anyway, bus is available to Taiping. Yes, it is resonable, coz most visitor choose to climb the mountain via Tangkou.

I'll be visiting Hangzhou end of this month.
Is it easy to take a bus from hangzhou to Huangshan on my own and upon arrival check into a hotel and only then take up a local tour for sightseeing around Huangshan upon arrival? Or would you advise that I pre-book the hotel and tour ahead? Do you have any recommendation on local tour operator?

Aug. 3,2009 02:37
Mr.Shan replied:

For the transportation, please see my answer to Mr. Simon below. As for hotel, I think you could find one when you arrive there. But, it is also very easy to book one online in advance so that you will be worry about it any more.

I'll be visiting Huangshan in early Sep. Need help on few questions:

1) Is there any bus transportation from Hangzhou to Tangkou or Huangshan Scenic Area directly? If yes, where can i buy the tickets in Hangzhou
2) Any recommendations on budget hotel at Huangshan mountain top?
3) Should i avoid overnight stay at mountain top during weekend (due to heavy visitors)?

Tks in advance ...

Aug. 3,2009 02:32
Mr.Shan replied:

1. The Huangshan Scenic Area is just located in Tangkou, so they are the same. From Hangzhou West Bus Station, there are 6 buses departing to the scenic area everyday. You could purchase the ticket just when you arrive at the bus station.
2. the cheapest method is that you could rent a tent from the hotels on the mountain. Of course, it is available during summer days.
3. of course, you have to stay one night on the mountain to see the excellent sunrise next morning. Please don't worry that there are not so many travelers.

Hi!
There is no direct buses or train from Yichang to Huangshan. You should get to Wuhan first to catch the bus at Fujiapo bus Station. Buses to Huangshan leave at 18:50. The other way, take train from Yichang to Yingtan and then change to another train to Huangshan.

Mr.Shan replied:

Transportation: at Wuhan Xin Hua Rd Bus Station, there is a coach departing to Tangkou Town (just the Mt. Huangshan Scenic Area is)at 17:30 everyday. It takes about 8 hours and costs 238RMB per person.

Also, at the same bus station, there is a bus departing to Tunxi of Huangshan City at 08:30 (222RMB), also 8 hours. When you arrive at Tunxi, there is frequent bus leading you to Tangkou Town.

Accommadation: many hostels could found in Tangkou Town, you could search one online. If you would like to stay one night on the mountain, the Beihai Hotel is recommended, but expensive.

Cable car: the tour bus in the scenic are could take you to the cable car station directly. No need to worry too much.

Nice trip!

We are going to Huangshan in early September. We are staying at Huishang Hotel (across from the railway station) for one night. We want to start early the next morning to go to Yungu cablecar (trying to avoid the line-ups and the crowds!). What is the earliest we can take a bus to Yungu? Can we go by taxi or is it too expensive and maybe not the best way? We are staying one night at Beihai Hotel at the top. Also, how good is the weather in early September? Lots of rain? Sea of clouds possible? thank you!

Jun. 25,2009 22:23
Ms.Evelyn(China) replied:

Actually, the Yungu Hotel is better. It's near to the Yungu Cable Car Station. Huishang Hotel (near the railway station) is about 40 kilometers from the Mt. Huangshan Scenic Area. You can find a bus to Huangshan Scenic Area on the Huangshan Railway Station Square. The cost is not more than 20 Chinese yuan. After you arrive at Huangshan Scenic Area, just take the tour bus to the Cable Car Station. It's said that the cost is around CNY10. The best time to go to Huangshan is in July and August. The early September is also fine. Yes, you can see very beautiful sea of clouds. Wish you a good trip. :)

To Jeff,
By train: There is no direct trains from Wuhan to Huangshan. You should make a transfer at Nanchang, or Jiujiang I guess so.
By Bus: The bus station of Wuhan in Xinhua Rd, Hankou has long-distance bus to Huangshan and it would take 8 hours.
Hope it helps.

sorry to bother you, I was reading your post about the Huang shan information, and I have some question, if you could give me any advice Ill appreciate it.

A friend of mine and I are planning to go there, we already check plane, train (K818), and bus departing from Shanghai Railway Station, (1840 - 0040)., The thing is for us the train takes ages to get there, but you can -sleep- the night, the bus is cheaper and faster but the arrival time is not that favorable having in mind we were adviced theres no such thing as taxis at the bottom of the mountain so... that keeps holding us from taking it.

What is better to go to Tongkua or Tunxi?

Once we arrived there we want to stay in the Beihai Hotel at the Beihai Sigthseeing part in order to look the sunrise (yes we already checked the weather), how its this possible you enter the park on saturday morning pay the 230 fare, and can stay the nights you want ?? I mean can we just go down on sunday or we need to pay again?

If we stay in tunxi, the arrival place is near the bus station to shanghai, so we can catch the train and come back straigth to shanghai, what time would be recommended?

thank you so much for your time,

Jun. 5,2009 21:57
Ms.Merley replied:

Hi, I suggested that you take the direct bus from Shanghai to Tangkang (much closer than Tunxi to the scenic area). And, the bus only takes 5 hours on the way, not like the 15 hours train.

As for the bus, you could take these ones departing from Shanghai South Bus Station (at Shanghai South Railway Station). Here the buses to Huangshan depart at 06:28, 10:12, 17:12. So, I think the former two could meet your needs. Then, you could climb up the mountain in the afternoon or stay in Tangkou Town for one night and visit the morning early next morning.
Yes, you could stay over on the mountain, don't have to pay for another ticket.

As for returning to Shanghai, you could take the same buses at Tangkou, too.

Hello. I am intended to go to Hangzhou, Suzhou, and Huangshan under DIY package for about 9 days. Would like to check what is the best route to go Huangshan (from Hangzhou better or from Suzhou?)

How about the transportation? Will it be any issues if without prior booking of the Hotels in these places nad just walk-in?

Shall we travel in Hangshan area without Tour Guide?

Thank you

May. 2,2009 21:55
Mr.James replied:

There is train from Hangzhou to Huangshan. If you want to travel by train, you should choose Suzhou (two trains a day about 11 hours).
By bus: Hangzhou West Bus Station has a dozen of buses a day to Huangshan city center (2.5-3 hours), then you can change to buses to huangshan Scenic area (1 hour). Suzhou has much fewer buses (only one in 6am)or you need to make a transfer at Hangzhou. Generally speaking, suggest you depart from hangzhou by bus. Or you go with your friends, you can consider rent a car together to get to the destination from hangzhou.

May. 20,2009 11:19
Mr.Dickson (Malaysia) replied:

Dear Mr James, thanks for your advice. Will only travel alone so will prefer train or bus to Huangshan instead of charter a car.

Any idea what is the fare for bus from Hangzhou to Suzhou? How about from Suzhou to Hangshan and from Hangzhou to huangshan?

Sorry so many questions want to ask...

Thanks

May. 20,2009 22:43
Mr.Tom replied:

The bus fare from Hangzhou to Suzhou is 69RMB. Hangzhou to Tunxi, Huangshan is 84RMB, to Huanggshan Scenic Area is 93RMB/99RMB. No bus from Suzhou to Huangshan.

May. 21,2009 10:21
Mr.Dickson(Malaysia) replied:

Dear Mr. Tom,

Thank you. Your information is very useful to me. How about from Tunxi to Mt. Huangshan (top) or from scenic area to Mt. Huangshan (top)? What is the type of transportation and the charges like?

Thanks in advance.

May. 22,2009 03:15
Mr.Tom replied:

Well, from Tunxi to Huangshan, you could catch a bus to Tangkou at the east square of Huangshan Railway Station or at the Huangshan Bus Station. The fare is 15yuan or 18yuan per person.

After arriving at the bus station of Tangkou Town, you have to take a bus at Zhaixi Transfer Center which is just 3-minute from Tangkou Bus Station. Except traveling by foot, all of travelers who are going to enter into the Mt. Huangshan Scenic Area should take Xinguoxian (新国线)buses here. The tour special bus could take you to the South Gate of Mt. Huangshan where you could start a Mt. Huangshan journey. The bus fare is 13yuan per person. At the bus station's ticket office, you could buy the Yuping Cable Car Tickets, too. See the details at:

May. 20,2009 23:02
Mr.Shan replied:

Well, if you take the bus to Huangshan Scenic Area directly, you will stay over at the foot of the Mt. or on the mountain. At the foot, there are the Tangkou Hotel and Tangquan Hotel. On the mountain, there are White Cloud Hotel, Shilin Hotel~

If your bus arrive at Tunxi, the downtown area of Huangshan. I think you could stay one night at the city area where the hotels could supply good quality service. You could consider the Huangshan Golf Hotel or the Huangshan International Hotel, both of them are five-star rated. On the next morning, you could take a bus from the downtown area to Mt. Huangshan. The buses at Huangshan Bus Station (also Tunxi Bus Station) leave for Mt. Huangshan once every 5 minutes. The journey is about 1 hour.

It is about 470 kilometers from Shanghai to the Huangshan Scenic Area and 430 kilometers from Shanghai to Huangshan City. Everyday, the Shanghai South Bus Station has three coaches to the scenic area directly respectively at 06:28, 10:12 and 17:12. The fare is 140RMB per person.

BTW, there are two trains departing from Shanghai Railway Station to Huangshan City. You could search the trains at: http://www.travelchinaguide.com/china-trains/
