I am looking for advice for visiting Tai shan on a day trip from Qufu, during winter.
What is the best way to travel from downtown Qufu to Taishan? What's the best time to start hiking? What routes are open to hike? Thanks!

You can first get to Qufu railway station and then take the train to Taishan railway station. On arrival, take a bus or taxi to Taishan scenic area. The best time to start climbing is at about 24:00 and go up to see the sunrise. The most popular route is starting from Hongmen.
