Yes, they SAID they were revoking his visa after he told them he could not continue to work without sufficient pay. He had worked for them for 5 months. He was to be paid 8000 RMBs/month but never got a full pay. In fact, after working his work hours plus more, he got zero salary for one month. They demanded his passport after physical agressiveness, threatening to throw out his belongings, and demanded money in exchange for his passport. He gave them 6000 RMBs (even though he never got his salary owed to him for this months work). This all happened April 20/21. He is staying in Shanghai until he can get a sleeper train to go to hong kong on saturday. His residency date is until Feb/2010. Please answer my original question. The above information does not answer it. Does the residency date also gets revoked on the same date that the work visa is revoked?

Ms.Jones, yes, residency date also gets revoked on the same date that the work visa is revoked, but please don't worry, the enter & exit department of Public Security Bureau in Shanghai will issue a 7 days visa for him to prepare to leave China. In other words, Dragon ESL school maybe just threaten your son and won't take true measures.

The reality is that the school is not able to revoke the visa, they must inform the Public Security Bureau Exit and Entry Administration to have this done. The general expereince of foreigners in this situation is that it never happens.
He SHOULD go to such a PSB office and ask for a tourist visa, which might be as little as 7 days but will probably be for longer if he wants it. However, he will probably be OK just carrying on with his 'work visa'. In fact if he originally had a work visa he should now have a temporary residency permit...but this does not change the situation.
If he can find another employer and explain the situation, there is a possibility that the residency can be transferred. This is a somewhat uncertain option which depends a lot on the new employer and its relationship with the local PSB.
To any new readers, the moment there is a problem with your pay not being on time, ACT IMMEDIATELY. At worst you will lose a month or so pay.

The employers will revoke his work visa? Only the visa issuing organizations have the right to revoke the visa.
