Do they have to get it transferred, and travel with both passports?

The agency is right that, you may be requied to leave China every 30 days if you apply for a multiple entry visa, and the proof of travel should be your round-way air tickts. You can apply for a China tourist visa with one entry to China, which may allows you stay in Chian for 30 to 180 days. Howver, you have to ask your family in China to provide you an invitation letter enclosed with their valid address, contacts as well as copy of their residence permit in China, and the letter should be stamped by th elocal public security bureau as well.

I have the same question, as well, but I was told that it's not possible. He doesn't have the same qualification, so they said that they can't.

Your husbands can apply for a work visa based on yours. they don't have to present any work permits frrom Authorized Chinese unit, they just have to submit your marriage certificate when applyinf for the visa. However, they may not be allowed to work in China with the dependent work visa.
If I got it correctly, my husband can get the dependnt visa but may not be allowed to work eventhough my company wants to hire him or he can get a work visa which is the same as mine. There is no need for me to file a petition for him to be with me in China. Is my understanding correct?

The company/institute/company in China which invites you can apply this certificate for you in the Ministries and Commissions of the State Council, the Government of all Provinces, Autonomous Regions, Municipalities directly under the Central Government, and Foreign Affairs Offices and Bureaus of Economy and Commerce hereunder, and departments and units recognized by the Department of Consular Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China.
You don't need to pay for it.

I guess you don't need a entry permit to hong Hong or Macau. Chinese citizens living in overseas can visit Hong Kong for 7 days at most without an entry permit.
