I'M a South African citizen preparing to travel to Shanghai for a conference. Do I need to apply for a VISA online? If yes, where do I access the application portal? If not, where do I access the application forms? Also, what documentation is needed for the VISA application? Do I need an appointment to visit the centre?

Yes, you do need to apply for a visa in advance.

1. First, you should fill in an application form online first: cova.mfa.gov.cn and then make an online appointment at its official website: avas.mfa.gov.cn.

2. Take your valid passport, invitation letter, photos, and completed application form, to the local Chinese visa application service center to submit all the documents in person on appointed date.

You may apply for F visa but an invitation letter is must.

The processing time of visa application is usually 4 working days, costing 1,760 ZAR for a single-entry.
