when booking a trip to china through a travel agent. does the tourist visa apply. or do i need to get that on my own and how

To get a visa, you need to do so with your passport. If your travel agency didn't take your passport, then you will need to get your visa on your own. I used pandavisa.com to get mine. It took about 3 weeks from when I sent it in and cost around 200 usd. Good luck!
