Itinerary: 16 Days Beijing - Xian - Kunming - Guilin - Shanghai - Suzhou - Hangzhou - Shanghai
"We enjoyed our tour very much and would recommend that others use your services. Two of our tour guides, Li Xia in Kunming and Yang Yan in Suzhou, were excellent, and added considerably to the experience. (Our guide in Hangzhou, whom we know only as Zhou, was just adequate; and the fellow who handled our transfer in Shanghai, David, was earnest but inexperienced.)
You already know about our problem with the Wei Long Hotel in Kunming; in our view, it is not suitable for Western tourists and certainly does not deserve four stars. The only other complaint we have concerns the standard tourist lunches in China.
Having visited China many times now, and having lived and worked there, we know how good Chinese food can be. We also know that standard tourist lunches are generally awful. We thought perhaps with just two of us, we would get better food than the large groups. In fact, we got exactly the same food -- and enough for a table to 10! Most of it ended up wasted.
I understand that groups of 20 tourists must be fed efficiently, and that probably means the tourist lunch hotels and restaurants are necessary. They are also probably necessary in remote areas like the the Stone Forest outside Kunming. But they are not necessary for couples or very small groups in the major cities.
We strongly recommend that single-family groups go to a local restaurant with the guide and driver and order a typical meal in appropriate quantity. I doubt it would cost much more, the quality would be much higher, and there would be little waste.
Otherwise, the trip was very enjoyable and were grateful for your efficient arrangements."
