I want you to know that I consider the journey to China to be excellent, and very, very good value for the money. I will be happy to recommend your tours to anyone.
We were very fortunate that our traveling companions, Mr. and Mrs. Hauke, were lovely people, who also enjoyed the trip.
As far as the guides go, our favorite was "Lisa" in Beijing. She was just lovely to us, and made real efforts to be helpful and accommodating. I hope she continues to work on her English pronunciation, but her language was certainly adequate. I will never forget her in the Beijing airport with the big sign saying "Mr. Paul Anthony McNamee"! If you can, please send her our very fond greetings!
We also liked the guides in Wuhan very much. They called themselves "Bill" and "Head." They were inexperienced (we were their first clients!), but they could not have been nicer or more helpful. In fact, I would appreciate it very much if you could send me "Heads" email address--or give him mine. He was a person of real quality.
The one guide we did not like was "Julia" in Chonqing. We found her manner to be irritating, and she really just abandoned us at the transfer point to get on the ship. She did not explain to us what was going to happen, nor did she make any effort to see to it that we were well taken care of.
The other guides--"Peggy" in Xian and (I cant remember his name!) in Shanghai were very good and efficient, and very pleasant to work with.
Someone really should have explained that the transfer to the ship was going to involve a long bus ride, ending in a really hazardous approach to the loading point.. That was the only thing on the trip that we were dissatisfied with.
If it would be possible, I would suggest that you book rooms on the ship with better beds. I realize that the beds we had were fairly standard for that kind of ship, but they really were uncomfortable. I would have been happy to pay a bit more--quite a lot more--for a nicer bed.
The food everywhere was of a very high standard. I love Chinese food, so I was very happy at mealtimes!
The hotels were also very good. I have no complaints about any of them. Considering what we paid for the whole tour, I think the hotels were outstanding. We especially liked the hotel in Xian.
