Hotel Information
General
Astor House Hotel, Shanghai is the first western business hotel in China ever since Shanghai’s opening as a commercial port. It is also renowned as ‘famous milestone building of Shanghai’. Although more than 160 years passed, Astor House Hotel, Shanghai still remains its original style and historical sign. Einstein, Chaplin, Russell, former USA president Grant had once live in the guest room beside the middle hall, which was of course to be the hottest attraction - ‘the celebrity room’. Walking into the room, you'll see the paintings of celebrities, antique furniture like lightings and telephone. Other rooms also have their characteristics. The 160-year-old original floor feels a little bit resilient and stepping on it just like on the thick sedimentary accretion of history.

I stayed at the Astor House for 3 days in room 310, the Bertrand Russell room. It was a big room with walk in robe and big bathroom, with bath tub! A good room safe as well, easy to use, unlike some. Everything was of solid old quality, leather sofa, antique furniture and big desk with Internet terminal. They also have room that Einstein stayed in, and Charlie Chaplin twice, Zhou Enlai....etc. It has also hosted about 50 movies and TV series as it is instant historical location.
Front reception have excellent English, but the room service staff etc., have limited English. But they are charming and good at their job. The buffet breakfast in the sumptuous Peacock Room was embarrassingly elegant, and the Western and Chinese food very well cooked and presented. The restaurant staff is polished professionals. I am more of a backpacker kind of traveler but I wanted to terminate my last travel adventure with a bit of style. The cost for 3.5 days (late checkout on day 3) with quite a bit of room service food and laundry was about $500. But where else in the world could you have a Grand Hotel experience for that?
All in all an experience I will long remember. Thanks Astor House.

It is always a surpise to stay in a guinely old hotel. This is the case for the Astor. It is a real challenge to mix the old with the new without loosing something. Astor has mixed the two well and at a reasonable price. If you want the facilities and convenience of the modern internatonal 5-star hotel the Astor is most probably not for you. On the other hand if you want a comfortable well managed place full of history you, like me, will find this hotel to be one of your all time travel highlights.

Dear Ms Zhang,
My comments on the Astor House Hotel are :-
This is a historic and character hotel which also contains all the facilities one could expect and to a high standard. The hotel's location just off the north end of the Bund is very good, and the hotel is also within reasonable walking distance of a Metro station. It is straightforward to get to all parts of Shanghai and Pudong from the hotel. The hotel staffs were very helpful, e.g. in finding out which of the two stations in Shanghai my train to Nanjing actually departed from. I have no criticisms of this hotel.
Best Regards

1. I was not happy that I had to fax my credit card details when making this booking. A more secure payment method was desired.
2. I found the Astor House Hotel to be a sensational place to stay. The hotel's facilities are first rate, the staff friendly and helpful and the level of English spoken was acceptable. The rich history of the hotel is also an attractive asset. Who wouldn't want to stay in a place that also had Albert Einstein, Charlie Chaplain and a US President amongst its guests.
