Hi,
I am planning to be in Harbin from Jan 7th for Ice festival and having a hard time figuring out which hotel is near by. I am traveling with 2 small kids and thus would prefer something close to festival. Can you please help as I can not see the locations of hotels?

Thanks

Personally, Harbin Romantic Hotel is a good option as it is just close to Zhaolin Park, one of the venues for the ice and snow festival. If you have other request, you may choose a suitable one in Daoli District in city center, such as Shangri-La Hotel, Harbin, Harbin Bremen Inn and ect, where is close to the exhibition site.

Hello, I would first like to say how happy I was with the service from Maria at travelchinaguide; she was most helpful with information and did an excellent job.

The first arrangement was the pick up for my friend from mudanjiang at the airport, it was her first time on a plane and to travel so far and she was very nervous, she was so happy to come from the plane and see the man holding the card with her name and them be taken to the hotel in a city she did not know. The next morning they were back again with her to pick me and my family up and take us back to the hotel, we were all very pleased with this service thank you. It is very hard to plan a trip from 11,000 kilometers away but you made it an easy task for me and I am very thankful.

The Mudanjiang hotel was the friendliest hotel I have ever stayed in around the world, they upgraded our rooms at no extra cost and invited us to have meals with the staff several times, each day they made our stay there a special experience and we will remember forever. If you require any more information please ask and I will help.

Thanking you very much for your help in all matters

Peter Smith

But back to Harbin. To be honest I consider Harbin the ugliest and most stressful city I have ever been to. I have traveled a lot and come from Prague which is a one million city so I have a good 'city training'. (I admit my problem might be the fact that Prague is a very well preserved historical city with a nearly 1000 year history.) I understand that some people can find Harbin their favorite place because they have a strong emotional connection to it. But I am an 'objective' European and my view is - yes, you can find some pieces of nice architecture in Harbin, but these are scattered chaotically around the city and usually surrounded by horrible 30 store buildings (at night illuminated by the obligatory sick-like fluorescent lamps) and thousands of rushing cars constantly using their horns. The Zhongyang street is the only 'compact' 'historical' (100 years!?) area but it is spoiled but the nearby skyhouses and numerous west-style shops, fast food, shopping centers etc. Yes, the green area along the river is quite nice but how many such areas you can find in the 4 million city? You can scarcely breath there, it is only thousands of tons of concrete and the omnipresent cars. And I consider Harbin the most pedestrian-unfriendly city I have ever been to. Crossing streets? No problem if you do not mind risking your life a hundred times a day. And getting along Harbin? No problem if you have and aspirator to survive in the smoggy air and lots of time, because in the four million city there is no underground traffic system. All you can use is buses (so full that sometimes you have to wait for two, three next ones), taxis or rickshaws. If Harbin does not start building a subway, its traffic system will collapse in a short time, people will develop health problems etc. That is my view. I appreciate any comments to my comment...

I have just got back from Harbin and I am still shocked. I know in China people usually keep their negative comments for themselves so that other people do not 'lose their face' but I can not resist expressing my negative experience with Harbin.

But before making the negative ones I would like to make a few general positive comments. The Chinese are very friendly people and even though their command of foreign languages is very close to zero they always did their best to understand us and help us. I also appreciate the Chinese people are so decent. Even in the poorest areas we were not bothered. The countryside of Heilongjiang is beautiful. Lakes, waterfalls, woods – are really beautiful. Chinese food is delicious - fresh, colorful, lots of vegetables, dumplings, rice... I love walking in the streets at night with all the nicely smelling food...
