Have stayed here 4 times. Reliable standards, many of the same staff at each visit. Good service, comfortable & clean rooms, especially well for longer stays, as there is separate kitchens with small refrigerator, microwave, coffeemaker, sink. Also a separate living and bedroom - a suite, as advertised. Plumbing has been reliable with abundant hot water each visit. A bit quirky internet service -- two wired outlets , one in bedroom, one at desk in living room, but only the bedroom one is "live" , so need to request an extension cable to be able to sit at desk and use internet via your laptop. Once sorted out, it is reliable. Staff invariably friendly and helpful. Located an easy 10 minutes walk from Jiangsu Lu stop on metro line 2. This is about 10-15 minutes subway ride from the touristy areas like Renmin Park, Nanjing Lu, and the Bund. No good maps (too small for cabbie to read) and cabbies do not all know location, as another commenter noted, but they do figure it out. Neighborhood actually full of good neighborhood restaurants, bakeries, etc. More of a "real" neighborhood than closer to the Bund. Buffet breakfast is above average, always a few types of steamed buns, congee, noodle soup, soymilk & crullers, fried rice or noodles & vegetables, as well as western options including freshly prepared to-order eggs, yogurt, fruit, cheese, sauages/bacon, salad, bread, etc. A nice touch is free English language morning paper in the lobby.

Thank you so much for the kind gesture. I am happy with my stay in Howard Johnson recently. The room is nice, clean and quiet. The only setback is they do not have good restaurant as in most Chinese hotel.
Anyway overall I am quite happy and will most probably stay again in the near future.

- Staff was ok, but after check-in didn't speak to a soul, I guess as long you don't approach them, they think everything is fine.
- The housekeeping maid was very nice and tried to be as quiet as possible, what is very rare in Asia, but luckily I could speak Chinese, since she couldn't speak any English.
- My little suite was all I needed and I felt very comfortable there, the onlt concern was the mildew in the airconidioning unit in the bedroom, don't think that's very healthy, luckily I didn't use the it!
- The location can be a bit tricky for people who don't speak Chinese, since most of the taxi drivers didn't know it, not even the Chinese name of it and the nearest subway station is quite a bit away.
- The booking experience was great, easy and quick, they just forgot to mention, that the Hotel was asking for a deposit in cash or by credit card since the room was paid in full.................
