I was travelling with my wife and my fifteen year old daughter. We booked a room for three adults. When we arrived the staff were not helpful. We got the impression that if you did not speak Chinese they were simply not interested in talking to you.
When we attempted to pay for our stay as requested in our booking information document, we were handed a bit of paper which indicated we had to pay about 80% over the quoted booking fee. When we asked why repeatedly, we were handed another piece of paper that had 1.5 written on it. We worked out they wanted an extra fifty percent but the amount thay were asking for was higher. They decided to ignore us and continued to service Chinese clients. After neaarly half an hour, I had to call my lawyer and get him to speak with them. He was told they needed a security deposit for the room key. I have never had to pay deposits for keys and I use from motels to 5 star hotels continually.
When we got to the room, it had towels, cups and other essentials for only two people. When I went to the reception and asked if we could have some tea, they told me it would cost 15 RMB per person. I went to a nearby supermarket and bought a whole box for 14 RMB. In the interim, my daughter had a cup of coffee and at check out time we were charged 15 RMB for it. I have never, in 51 year travelling around the world, paid for tea or coffee in any hotel irrespective of whether it was budget or otherwise.
When we asked if they could let us know what transport was available to go to the Bund, we were totally ignored. People in the street proved helpful and welcoming. They had a willingness to help that put the hotel staff to shame.
I booked a budget accommodation outlet. That is what I got. I have no issue with the premises, they were adequate.
We were not looking for any particular location. We had no problems with it. Anyone looking for a central location may have better alternatives. We had no objections. We made friends with business people in the area and were welcome in all outlets. We found traders honest and friendly. Local residents were equally friendly and helpful.
I used a 168 Motel in SuZhou and had none of the attitudes I encounter at SiPing.
We are dealing with people. Some are good, some are not. I am not allowing my experience in ShangHai predispose me against the 168 chain.
I had no problems effecting my booking. I was satisfied with your service. I have no suggestions at this time. Good work.
