I have stayed at this hotel on many occasions over the last five years and have always found it to be excellent. I admit the views from the rooms can be poor but the area of Shamian is worth getting out to walk around at any time of day or night.
Hotel staff are always helful and speak good English and the rooms are always clean & well presented. After travelling I find it the perfect place to relax before moving on.
The busy city (and a night shopping street) is just a short walk away after you cross the bridge.
I suppose my only complaint would be that any extras you may want in the hotel (eg laundry) are more expensive as everything comes with a service charge - but that is your choice !

Dear TCG, Thank you for the booking service and for asking my opinion of the hotels.

Victory Hotel Guangzhou: Location is very nice in Shamian Islands with many Western-styled buildings. Banks are very close, shops are everywhere, convenient stores are abundant. All are within walking distance. The staffs speak very good English, and are nice.

We stayed in a Superior Room on the East Building. Air Conditioning works well, but Heater doesn't work. When we turn on the heater, we get cool air. Heater doesn't work. Because it was night, and the kids were asleep, we decided not to call the maintenance guy.

Beds are small for one adult and one young kid (under 6 year old). They don't have bigger beds. If you travel with kids, this hotel might not be on the top of the lists in terms of bed size. Room is small but cozy.

Overall, we are pretty satisfied with all the hotels although some improvements are needed.

The experience was everything I expected. The hotel was "American" friendly and the staff quite courteous and English speaking. I booked the hotel in country and there were no issues when I arrived at the hotel in Guangzhou. The Victory itself is an older hotel with a funky old world charm. The water was hot and the cable was good all important amenities for me. We took advantage of the business center/travel center to hit the Internet for email and also to book additional flights. The hotel is located within reason of the train/subway entrance and makes for pretty easy travel since taxi's are more expensive than I am used to. The hotel is older and as a result they lowered the ceilings a bit in the bathrooms to allow for modern plumbing/conveniences. Room service was good and prompt. The breakfast was western and Chinese style as you would expect and the nice feature I appreciated was paying for it only if you use it. Many hotels include this in your booking price and labeled complimentary but if you have early flights you lose out. Another nice amenity that is either Guangzhou law or a hotel service is written record of the taxi driver license via the valets. And for payment they took my American Express.

The booking experience went well. I think I am not unusual when I state that online booking can be cause for anxiety to the traveler especially during perceived high booking times (Chinese New Year). The feedback email loops provided to me with TCG were smooth with no issues and no issues when we arrived at the hotel.
