Its main contribution was unifying China and providing a good institution model and infrastructure for the Tang dynasty.
The Sui dynasty is to the Tang dynasty, as the Qin dynasty is to the Han dynasty.
Both Qin and Sui started out with a very competent ruler that unified China and made sense of things, while his successors got too cocky and screwed the whole thing up, destroying the dynasty but leaving the infrastructure for future dynasties to claim.
