to get from Wanchai, Hong Kong Island to Dongmen, Shenzhen, would it be best to take the train (which means getting to Kowloon first) or the cross border bus from wanchai to huanggang and then a taxi. what would you recommend?

Recommend you go through Luohu Border. You can take MTR from Wanchai to Luohu and pass the border to tale Subway Line 1. As the map shows above, you hshould get off at Lao Jie. That is Dongmen.

Of course Guangzhou is the nearest city to Shenzhen. It is about two hours by bus. It need more than 20 hours from Beijing or Shanghai by train, and 3 hours by air. Just choose bus from Guangzhou bus station to longgang area.
