Mogao Caves visit

Mogao Caves locate 25 km southeast of Dunhuang city, also named "Thousands Buddha Caves". It is the largest scaled and most abundant one among the present preserved caves. It has 492 caves, 45000 square meters mural paintings and 2415 colorful statues. However, only 10-15 caves and 2 exhibition halls can be visited, from 8:00-18:00 each day. It is closed in rainy days.

Visitors are not allowed to take photos in the caves. To protect the murals in the caves, the lighting condition is not very well in the caves and you'd better visit with an electronic torch. The best visit time is in the morning, when would be much lighter.

i went to beijing in nov 2004. freezing cold, but an awesome city.

honestly, i can't tell you anything that's not in a guide book (other than to dress warmly... i doubt october is too much warmer than november), because i did the "tourist" thing for the 4 days i was there (packing all the "star" attractions from my guidebook into 4 days).

i did a tour from my hotel to get to the Great Wall. be in shape to hike! it's not a joke getting to the top (only 2 others from my hotel bus made it to the top with me).

oh, in the forbidden city/tianamen square area (which you should definitely see), you'll get approached by guys claiming to be english students who want to practice their english. they'll suggest a tea house. i assumed i was being scammed, but i went anyway, cuz i was freezing cold and wanted some warm tea. their real goal is to get you to buy overpriced tea... but frankly, i didn't care. i got warm, had some good conversation with a local (who was actually practicing his english... but only to scam more tourists like me into overpaying for tea), had some good tea and got to go through the tea ceremony. it was cheap by western standards, though later when i was in guangzhou i found out that i'd paid 2-3 times what i should have.

i stayed at the Great Wall Sheraton. there's a cool nightclub there, and nearby (on the other side of all the embassies) there's a street with lots of upscale bars and music clubs.... i don't remember the name, but i could look it up if you want (that i learned from an internet friend... i'd have to search my IM logs).

i was a total "tourist" in beijing (not my normal travel mode), but i still thought it was a great city.
