Although I had longed to see the Great Wall, I have to say that Tiananmen Square and the picture of Mao looming over the whole of the square is very imposing. Visited on New Years day, it will stick in my mind for the rest of my life.

Staying in Hutongs or Walled Chinese city housing was like living in the past. China really is an imposing country. I always fell into a loss unconsciously...

Beijing Night Market is a good place to go. It's near the Forbidden City, occurs regularly, and features incredible food in a beautiful part of Beijing. If you're brave enough to eat food prepared on the street, you can eat like a king -- everything from spicy noodles to sweet bean pastes to skewered rats! And it's tourist-affordable, like nearly everything in China.

Prices for Tourist Traps in Beijing

Hello all!

I am going to be a brave adventure after studying a year of chinese in Sichuan province and try to do a self relied trip to Beijing (meaning no tour groups, which no offense I abhor). I travel byself a lot so I am not worried but I cannot find the details i need to plan budget while there and for me it is very frustrating. I have found some but not enough so if anybody can fill in gaps i would appreciate it.

Some of the places I would like to know prices for are:
Drum Tower
Tiananmen
Great Wall (and how to get there by public- would prefer Mu Tian Yu or Si Mai Tai)
The Ming Tombs (and how to get there from the great wall)
Underground City
Forbidden City
Temple of Heaven
Summer Palace

and also what are taxi prices like now?

Thanks a ton!
