Yangshuo great cafe recommendations

Just wanted to write for those staying in Yangshuo anytime soon......

We stayed for 5 days recently and as people in our late 30's, we're not into the late night party scene. I say this because Yangshuo surprised us with it's streets of bars that blast techno music and awful covers from live bands until about 2am every night. If you can find peace and quiet, consider yourself lucky.

In any case, we thankfully found that Gui Hua Road is great for eating outdoors in a relaxed, fairly peaceful place and that the Yak Cafe, run by Andrew Lay and his wife Sula, is FANTASTIC! We can't recommend it enough, especially for a great western breakfast, or an afternoon coffee, tea, or beer. We never ate dinner there, but the menu looked great!

Andrew hails from Canada, and Sula from China. Andrew believes in and understands the meaning of great service and great food, and if you've been in China like we were for 6 weeks, great service in particular is hard to find. In fact, getting our meals served at the same time in China almost never happened, but Andrew understands this, and to hear his earnestness in wanting to have the best cafe in Yangshuo and his commitment is inspiring. Plus he's just a neat guy to chat with. We immediately felt welcomed and cared for, and it was a pleasure to listen to his story of coming to China and starting the business with Sula. We left Yangshuo feeling a real pride in eating there each morning and supporting their business and I promised I would write a review to alert other travellers to give their great cafe a shot.

Also of note, Kelly's Cafe just a few cafes down from the Yak, serves great Chinese food, and Kelly is likewise super friendly.

Enjoy your stay in Yangshuo. It is beautiful. Just bring earplugs!

One of the highlights of my family's trip to China was biking and rafting along the Yulong River in Yangshuo Village. We started off from the beautiful Yangshuo Mountain Retreat where we were staying, and rented mountain bikes. From there we rode through the villages, stopping along the way to take photos and ended up 20km up river an ancient stone bridge. Some of the local kids were jumping off the parapet, which looked to be about 10meters+, into the clear water below. My son got up the nerve and jumped too! We crossed the bridge and biked about half way back on the other side, but the road was really rough in places so we decided to get a couple of bamboo rafts. We were told not to pay more than 20 yuan per person. It took us almost an hour to get back to Yangshuo Mountain Retreat, where after a hot shower we had dinner outside under the stars. Perfect! I strongly recommend you to experience it by yourselves on the free day!
