Descriptions:
Dragon's Backbone Rice Terraces - Situated some 30 kilometers away from the town seat of Longsheng, the rice terraces consist of Ping'an Zhuang Terrace and Jinkeng Yao Terrace, symbolizing the authentic Zhuang and Yao ethnic farming culture. As a famous tourist brand of Guilin Longsheng, the terrace is just like a pastoral poet, representing the most grand and spectacular rice terraces in the world. In the villages around, you can experience the best preserved ethnic customs. Lush terraces in June and golden rice in September are the most beautiful scenes.

Sanjiang Dong Autonomous County - Sanjiang is the only Dong ethnic autonomous county of Guangxi, featuring well preserved Dong residential houses and villages. It collects the most Dong architectural complexes. Wooden shelter bridges and drum towers are wonderful representatives. Chengyang Shelter Bridge is the most famous one. There are seven ethnic minorities, Dong makes up half of its total population. Festivals and celebrations of these minorities are held all the year round.

Reed Flute Cave - The Reed Flute Cave is situated on the south slope of the Maomaoshan Hill in Guilin, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. It's one of the most famous karst caves in China. In the past, wildcats and other small animals often appeared there. So, the locals nicknamed it Ye Mao Yan (Wildcats Cave). Later, as many reeds grew at the mouth of the cave and they could be made from flutes, the local renamed it Lu Di Yan, translated to English as Reed Flute Cave.

Elephant Trunk Hill - The Elephant Trunk Hill is a representative of Guilin natural sceneries. It's originally named Li Hill, Yi Hill or Chenshui Hill. It's situated at the joint of the Li River and the Taohuangjiang River in Guilin City. The hill looks like a giant elephant standing by the side of the river to drink. It has an altitude of about 200 meters, 55 meters above the river. It's 108 meters long and 100 meters wide, covering an area of about 1.3 hectares.

Mr.Jeong replied:

I think you have covered all the highlights around Guilin already. Usually it is no problem to view the terraced field in Longsheng, but if it happened to rain or foggy that day, you would see nothing.

Very keen to see the Dragons Backbone Terraces etc if practical for us. How far we need to walk from the place we getting off the car to the sightseeing place?

Sep. 15,2009 04:50
Ms.Lynda replied:

The place you will visit the Dragon's Backbone Rice Terraces is called Longsheng. 1.5 hours walking along the hillside is needed for a single way to visit the Terraces. If you plan to stay in Longsheng for one night, do not take your large luggage with you, otherwise, you will be exhausted since all of the hotel are built at the half hillside.

I am traveling with an elderly person (80 years). Will be there any problem for us to visit Longsheng? Is there much climbing?

Aug. 27,2009 22:13
Mr.Jack Liao replied:

Yes, about 2 hours step-climbing is required if you visit the Rice Terraces. Perhaps it will be a little bit hard for the elder one. But there are private sedan chairs available at the foot of the mountain. You can hire one to carry you up.

Not recommend visiting Longsheng, especially the Dragon Backbone Terraced fields in winter. It is very moist in Guangxi province in winter and it is very easy to encounter the foggy or rainy weather there. Under this condition, it is impossible to catch any view of the terraced fields at all. Also, in the winter, the water level of the Li river is too low for ship cruising. If it is rainy or windy, it''s also freezing on the boat. To enjoy the beautiful in a good day, with a good mood, avoid winter visit. I suggest.

I arrived in Guilin train station in the early morning, about 7:30am. Turning left and go ahead about 5 minutes, you will find the bus station. Buy a ticket for Longshen at the rate of 17Yuan RMB(including 2 YUAN for insurrance). Get off at the Heping(means Peace) road, hire a bus to take you to the senic spots at the price of 5 yuan. Attention: the road condition can not be worse. Very bumpy, and narrow, and somtimes there is turbid water with small rocks flow down from the mountain on the road side. There is a traditional building near the spot, not far from the two sightseeing places.
The hotel has private wash room, tidy and clean.
