The Wooden Stilt House - By making use of steep hillside, the local people use wood to build their houses, whose structure is jointed by tenon and mortise, without a single snail or rivet. The layers of these houses look very much like pyramid-shaped structure from afar, spectacular indeed!
Paper-making in Shiqiao Miao Village - Shiqiao paper is smooth, white, and difficult of bursting. It is said that the paper making in Shiqiao Miao Village has a history of over 1,000 years. By using Han people's experience, the local Miao people use high-quality spring water, tree roots and bark to make papers. Their craft of paper making is regarded as a “live fossil”. Come to Shiqiao, you'll have a chance to witness how they make papers.
Boji Miao Village - Shaped like a dustpan, Boji Miao Village is located in Danzhai County where the land is beautiful and fertile. Over 100 households live here generation after generation. The life in this old village is quite serene and bucolic.

The old city walls in Qingyan Old Town are built of huge thick stones near cliffs. It looks like very dangerous and fearsome. Qingyan Old Town is right famous for this. Inside the city gates, majority of things in the town are made from stone, thus giving the city the name "the city of stones."
Since this town is well preserved with original flavor and unique characteristics, many TV stations and photographers come to the town to film TV programs. One of the most famous films shot here, is called Searching for the Gun, Jiangwen is the leading actor in it.
This town is also famous for its snacks. Mutton rice flour noodles is one of the most famous tasty treats, some others are like rose candies, chili chicken and cured meat. The many different colors, smells and tastes will leave you wanting more! Worth visiting!

Encircled by numerous villages, home to minority groups and some pretty countryside, Kaili is a real "festival land" with over 130 festivals taking place throughout the year. The climate in Kaili is mild, the scenery is impressive, ranging from waterfalls to rolling hills. Transporation to the countless Miao villages is quite convenient, most are only about 10 km away, including the famous Langde and Xiangzhigou Miao villages.
Kaili is easily accessible by train. The best way to get there is to take train No. 248 from Guiyang. The whole journey takes about 3 hours. Kaili train station is located at the north of the city. Take bus No. 1 from the station to downtown Kaili or the bus station.
Kaili Bus Station has daily long distance buses to Guiyang, Zhengyuan, Rongjiang and Congjiang from 8 am to 5:30 pm.
The easiest way to visit the outskirt towns is to take a minibus. Buses going to Xianglu Mountain, Yudong Cave and Longchang can be found along Beijing Xi Lu while for southern destinations such as Leishan and Xijiang, you should pick up a bus on Shaoshan Nan Lu or head straight to the bus station.
The local flavors in Kaili are spicy and sour. Fish Hotpot with sour soup is one of the most famous dishes in Kaili, which is made by putting a fresh carp in boiled water and then adding the special sour seasonings. Beef tendon is another popular dish that is pretty

We spent the entire day watching and participating in the annual Lusheng Festival. All the local villagers came to march in the parade, socialize, meet friends and be entertained. The Miao groups wore their local colorful charming festival dress, loaded with real silver and artificial silver headdresses and jewelry. The Lusheng contest inside Kaili Stadium was held at noon.
Vibrant or colorful can''t accurately describe what we saw. The local ethnic minority people acutally more interested in us than the festival itself. We were constantly being photographed, and asked to pose with their families and children for more photographs. We got more than 15 seconds of fame.
There were also some local vendors selling balloons for the children and handmade crafts...FYI, if you ever travel through China and need your pants shortened, some mending or tailoring needs, there are streets filled with women at their old Singer Sewing Machines who will be happy to take care of your sewing needs for ¥5.00 (it would be like ¥2.00 for local people, tourists would be over charged with no reason )
There was also the little Kaili Minority Museum, which is interesting, with knowledge and infomation about the customs and culture of the minority groups. The Museum also had two interesting shops with old minority jewelry, books, postcards and beautifully executed embroidered jackets for sale. Quite nice!

China has the most interesting markets I have ever seen! Explore them and enjoy the colors of unknown vegetables and fruits! But be prepared to see some ugly sights (for westerner''s eyes). Meat is still sold on the market without cooling.
