2 Days Independent Guangzhou Tour

If you have already covered all highlights in Hong Kong, and still have some spare time, travel to Guangzhou (Canton) from Hong Kong is a good option. Guangzhou is located on the Pearl River Delta, with fast accessibility to Hong Kong. Both express train and deluxe ferry boat are available from Hong Kong to Guangzhou. The express train runs from Kowloon Hung Hom Station to Guangzhou East Railway Station hourly, taking about 2 hours and costs HK$210 for a first class seat and HK$250 for a VIP seat. The high speed rail line between the two places is under construction. When it is fully completed in 2018, it will greatly shorten the travel time between the two places to about 45 minutes.

The ferry from HK China Ferry Terminal in Kowloon to Guangzhou Lotus Pier departs at 07:45, 11:30, 13:30 and 18:20. The voyage time is about 2 hours. The economy class seat ticket is HK$220 and HK$270 for a first class seat.

Day 1 Hong Kong - Guangzhou
For a traveler, train is more convenient than ferry from Hong Kong to Guangzhou as the ferry terminal in Guangzhou is a little bit far from the city center. It is recommended that you take an early morning train and arrive at Guangzhou before lunch time. From Guangzhou East Railway Station, you may take Subway Line 1 and interchange to Line 5 at Yangqi Station, then alight at XiaoBei Station, Exit A. Walking around 600 meters, you will reach the East Gate of Yuexiu Park. This park is the largest one in the city and famous for many historical relics and natural scenery, such as the Five-Ram Sculpture, Zhenhai Tower and the Square Cannon Site. The park is free for the public, but you need pay CNY10 for the Zhenhai Tower.

Dining in Guangzhou could be a very enjoyable thing as it is the stronghold of the world's most popular Cantonese cuisine. A large number of restaurants in the city serve various authentic local dishes, snacks and drinks. It is easier to find one that can cater to your needs.

The next destination is Museum of the Western Han Dynasty Mausoleum of the Nanyue King, just across the street from the West Gate of Yuexiu Park. The admission fee is CNY12. The owner of the tomb is the second king of Western Han Dynasty (206 B.C. - 24 A.D.) This museum is the actual excavation site of the tomb with a great collection of the funerary objects, such as bronze ware, terracotta ware, jade jewelry, etc, among which the highlight should be the jade burial suit.

The night cruise on Pearl River could be a memorable part of any visit to Guangzhou. Take Subway Line 2 and get off at Zhuhai Guangchang (Pearl River Square) Station. Then walk to the Tianzi Port. There are a few cruise ships sails from this port from 18:30 to 20:40. The ticket price varies in different classes and ships ranging from CNY48 to CNY150. During the cruise, you will admire the riverfront buildings and bridges under the sparking lights, among which the 1,968-feet (600-meter) Canton TV Tower is the spotlight. It is famous for its unique design with a slim waist in the middle of the tower, looking like a fair lady twisting her waist while looking behind.
Day 2 Guangzhou - Hong Kong

After breakfast, go to the Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall, which can be reached by Subway Line 2 and many buses. It is a monument to Dr Sun Yat-sen, the forerunner of Chinese democratic revolution. The entrance ticket is CNY10. Then take tourist bus Line 1 to the Temple of Six Banyans. It is an ancient Buddhist temple with a history of more than 1,400 years. There is an exquisite pagoda that catches visitor's eyes, where Buddhist relics are placed. You may have a relax time to appreciate the beautiful layout and architectures inside the temple and see the local people praying. The ticket fare is CNY15.

Then take Subway Line 1, get off at Chenjiaci Station, Exit D, you will reach the last destination in Guangzhou - Chen Clan Academy, which is actually a hall of ancestor worship and also a place for study. It is worthwhile to wander around this generously decorated historical building. The fine craftsmanship including the wood and brick carvings, ceramic sculptures and paintings, all of them make a comprehensive expression of the exquisite style of local folk art. The admission fee is CNY10.

After finishing up, take Subway Line 1 to Guangzhoudong (Guangzhou East Railway Station). And take the train back to Hong Kong. The last train leaves Guangzhou at 21:32.
