Warning: FIT at the International Youth Hostel in Lhasa

Warning: FIT at the International Youth Hostel in Lhasa, this place will promise you a deal and then raise the price at the last minute without warning, even after a deposit has been paid!

I went to organise a trip from Lhasa to Chengdu via the southern Sichuan-Tibet Highway during the month of September in Lhasa, bvut fond it incredibly hard to find a travel agency with a reasonable price range (5000-10,000RMB). I was unfortunate as to been promised a price of 8000RMB for this trip and agreed with the FIT at the international youth hostel (IYH) which will include all necessary permits and travel essentials for an 8 day trip to Chendu through Kham. I placed a deposit of 1000RMB and recieved a receipt and went on my way as they arranged my travel permits. They asked me to come back the following day to arrange an itinerary but when I arrived I was faced with the news that I would need a travel guide and that would cost another 2600RMB on top! I couldn't afford the increase but asked that if I get any more people involved in sharing the fare and they said it would make no difference to the price. Fortunately I placed an advertisement earlier in the week for this trip and had three replies that same day!! I hopped along merrily to the FIT and announced I would be happy to pay the price agreed in the morning. But the manager, who was sitting in front of the computer playing Spider solitaire by the way, murmered across his face that the price had gone up to 19,000RMB!!!!

This is not the way one does business no matter where you are!! I was thoroughly annoyed by those events and would not wish this upon anyone else who want to travel in Tibet.

I did however organise the trip with another FIT but not without their hiccups, ie not the car the promised, and an additional hitch hiker, but it was at a much more reasonable price of 6000RMB!!

I hope you have good luck arranging you trip in Tibet and remember, stay clear of the FIT at the IYH!!

The greatest danger to travellers here is not altitude sickness...it is walking in the open market downtown. The open-air stalls here are mainly run by very, very aggressive Tibetan women who get nasty if you do not buy something. One even spit at us when we did not buy their product!! Instead, I recommend the stores behind these stalls. Most of these are run by chinese who will give you a much better deal and also be much more polite. Otherwise, have fun and enjoy the temples.
