2 Days Travel to Yuxi

► Route: Kunming → Chengjiang → Maotian Mountain (Chengjiang Fossil Site) → Fuxian Lake

You will be surprised and excited as you go further into Kunming in Yunnan Province. This tour takes you to Chengjiang County of Yuxi to explore the Maotian Mountain National Geological Park and Fuxian Lake.

Take a coach from Kunming South Coach Station to Chengjiang County.

The first recommended stop in Yuxi is the Maotian Mountain National Geological Park, which is famous for the Chengjiang Fossil Site.

► How to get there: Take a pedicab from the Chengjiang Coach Station to the park, which costs CNY 5 per person. Or you can take a taxi, which costs CNY 100 for a round trip.

"Maotian" means "a straw hat from the heaven". The mountain earns its name as it resembles a huge hat. It was actually a very ordinary mountain until the discovery of the oldest and best-preserved ancient fossils. The paleontologists discovered 40 categories including 100 kinds of animal fossils. All of these are precious evidence for research on the life cycle. You will see fossils of trilobite, jellyfish, and naraoia of 530 million years ago.

Finishing the visit to the geological park, you need to return to Chengjiang County by pedicab or taxi and have lunch, and then take a bus from to Luchong Village for your next stop – Fuxian Lake.

► How to get there: Take the Lake Bus West Line from Chengjiang Coach Station to reach the Luchong Scenic Area on the west bank of the Fuxian Lake. It takes 50 minutes and costs CNY 10.

We suggest that you check in at a local hotel or guesthouse. After having a short rest, you can go to visit the beautiful Fuxian Lake, one of the largest freshwater lakes in China. It has an average depth of 95 meters (312 feet) and the water temperature averages 19 degrees Centigrade (66 degrees Fahrenheit), which makes it an ideal resort for swimming. The sand is clean and soft along the beach. You can camp on the lakefront, row a boat, and swim in the lake. For dinner, we suggest that you have a taste of the local dishes, such as the stewed Kanglang Fish in a copper pot and rice and vegetable steamed in a copper pot.

Get up early in the morning and catch a glimpse of the spectacular view of the sunrise on the lake. Then you can go on explore the Luchong Village, or take a boat to the Gushan Island, Fishing Caves in Mingxing Village, Cherry Valley, or Moon Bay. If time permits, you can rent a bicycle to ride around the lake.
