We enjoyed Lijiang very much. A spare half day to walk around the city and shops would have been of interest. The Grand Hotel is very good-located, just near the entrance to the old city, which is very convenient for walking around and have more Chinese atmosphere. We missed going to the Yunshanping Pastureland. The day was partly cloudy however the biggest deterrent was the long delays to get on the chairlift. 1.5 hours on the way up and 1.5 hours again on return. 3 hours standing in a queue is very much a waste of half a days sightseeing. The tourist management should look at some system of reservation for tour groups to book allocated times to use the chairlift. The Dali sector was well balanced and all aspects satisfactory. All meals were upto the standard expected. The hospitality of the Chinese people were wonderful.

Kunming is known as the "Spring City" in China. Do remember, just Kunming city, not the whole Yunnan province, for example Lijiang. The weather in Lijiang is very capricious and it rains and snows frequently. We thought Yunnan locates south of China and it should be warm, at least in August. However, it snowed when we visited the Tiger Leaping Gorge and the Jade Dragon Mountain. Because of the bad weather and the bad road condition, we could take the tour well. And also, we did not take much warm clothes with us, to avoid catching a cold, we only stayed short time there. What a pity! That's our dreaming place, but we did not learn enough lesson before and made full preparation, so that we couldn't enjoy ourselves there. We are now planning another trip to China. If possible, we want to visit Lijiang and shangri-la again.

Here are some tips about travel in Yunnan for your reference:

1. It will cost around 3.5 hours drive from Dali to Lijiang, and the coach tickets cost RMB55 per person. You can take flight back to Kunming from Lijiang, but if you want to save money, you can also take the coach and tickets cost RMB182 per person. It will cost you around 8 hours, so that's a hard trip. Anyway, you can still enjoy the beautiful sceneries out of the window en the route. That is also a pleasant thing.

2. Yunnan stands on the Yunnan-Guizhou plateau. So you need to take some necessary medicine to prevent the high altitude stress. Also pay attention to your skin. The ultraviolet radiation here is very strong, therefore the sunglasses and sunblock are also the must.

3. Take a warm coat or sweater with you. It will be needed when you visit the the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

4. If the weather is bad, the Tiger Leaping Gorge can be omitted, because it will be closed to tourists due to the safty consideration. You can't treck here, so... unnecessary.
