Lijiang Old Town

Day 01Arrival in Lijiang

Our guide will meet you outside the baggage claim area at Lijiang Airport and transfer you to the hotel. Visit the Square Street of the Lijiang Old Town. As you walk through the old town, you will immediately get overwhelmed by small bridges, swift streams, cobbled streets and grey tiled roofs of the Residential Houses. It is an ancient legacy of Naxi people. Naxi women in all types of clothing and hair-dressing appeal to visitors enormously. The Naxi Ancient Music performance at Dongba Palace is arranged in the evening.(L+D)

Descriptions: Residential Houses - The residential houses in Lijiang are commonly two-storey houses made of timber and earth. The layout of these houses is very much like that of the courtyard houses in Beijing. Generally, the layout follows the pattern of 'three rooms with one screen wall'. In addition, the houses are rich in ornamentation, mainly on the exterior corridor, the screen wall, windows, and the dooryard.

Naxi Ancient Music - Coming to visit the old town of Lijiang, do not forget to hear the traditional Naxi classical music, the Naxi Ancient Music. Regarded as a 'living fossil of Chinese music,' Naxi Ancient Music is played on traditional Chinese musical instruments such as flute, shawm, Chinese lute, plectrum, and zither. Listen carefully, you will find that the Music can purify your heart and free your mind.

Day 02Lijiang

Visit the Baishui Tableland, the Dry Sea, take the cable car to Spruce Plateau and overlook the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and visit the Baisha Village and a local Naxi family, the Baisha Murals, the Rock Joseph's Former Residence in Yuhu Village.(B+L)

Descriptions: Dry Sea - Being on the unique scenic site of Lijiang, the Dry Sea lies at the east foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. It had been a highland glacial lake before the 1940s. Gradually, the water dried up and it turned into a vast meadow. Having an elevation of 3,100 meters (10,171 feet), it is only 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) away from Lijiang Old Town. Dry Sea is considered as the best position to get a panorama of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain - The Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is the largest snow mountain in the northern hemisphere. Occupying an area of 960 square kilometers (370.6 square miles), the mountain stretches 35 kilometers (21.7 miles) from north to south and is 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) wide from east to west. At an altitude of more than 4,000 meters, the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain has now become a fantastic resort for sightseeing, mountaineering, skiing and exploration.

Baisha Village, Lijiang

Day 03Lijiang

Visit the Tiger Leaping Gorge, the First Bend on the Yangtze River with imposing gorge scenery, and the Iron Chain Bridge in the Stone Drum town. The town of Stone Drum got its name from a large, cylindrical, marble tablet shaped like a drum.(B+L)

Descriptions:
First Bend on the Yangtze River - The three tributaries of the Yangtze River, the Golden Sand River, the Lantsang River and the Nu River, surge forward from the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and join together in the northwest Yunnan Province. The Golden Sand River runs ahead to the Hengduan Mountain Range. When meeting a cliff in the Stone Drum Town, it suddenly turns to the northeast, forming a large V-shape bend. Thus it was named First Bend on the Yangtze River.

Stone Drum Town - The Stone Drum Town stands on a small hill beside the First Bend on the Yangtze River. In the town, there is a drum-shaped white marble stele, which is 15 meters (16.4 yards) long and 0.7 meters (2.3 feet) thick. It is at present one of the earliest stone steles that have been excavated in Lijiang. Leaning against the mountain, the Stone Drum Town used to be a strategic point during the past dynasties.

It''s no doubt the natural scenery in Yunnan province is beautiful, attractive, charming... While what I love most is to wander around the streets in the old town, take a picture with the local people, have a taste of the local food... Many villages in Yunnan are still a little bit unlightened while the people are very simplehearted and hospitable. Especially, I found Lijiang is a really heaven for living. I also noted some foreigners had made their home there. If possible, I would spare as long time as possible to visit Yunnan again and stay longer time there.

Hi,
we are interested in the tour itinerary, however we are wondering if it is possible for us to make the hotel reservations on our own, and join the tours. For day 1 would it be possible for us to go to Black pearl lake, and on the day of visit to the Tiger Leaping Gorge, we would like to get into shangriLa. It will be great if we could combine Lijiang with ShangriLa especially to see the monastery alias Potala palace.
please advise, thank you.

We are palning to travel Lijiang and we need more information for our consideration.

1. We like your tour itinerary. When is the best reccommend to travel there? We prefer the weather around 15-24 degree C. No rain

2. Can we choose our own hotel such as Banyan tree? Is it far from attraction places that we will visit?

3. If we are in a group of 14 persons ( 9 adults, 4 kids under 12 and 1 infant. How much for the price of the tour, airticket round trip from Bangkok, meals? Please propose both including and excluding hotel.

I am looking forward to hearing from you soon

Thank you.

I am looking for day trips in Lijiang and Zhongdian with a guide and maybe a car. Do you provide that service?

Della replied:

Hi Audrey, it's sure that we can provide the service. I would like to remind you that as you will take the tour solely, the tour price will be very high, for the guide and the car will serve you exclusively. I suggest you invite someone to tour with you to share the expense.

Hi, i just got back from a trip to Yunnan,
the place is beautiful and it''s worth seeing all of it. i would advise you to go to Lijiang that will give you the chance to photograph both nature and people.
The town is really great and you can take a lot of nice pictures. The main problem is that is really full of tourist, i mean, thousands and thousands;
so you basically have a few chance of getting the real Yunnan out of it. what i''ve done was renting a bike and rode in the countryside. It was really great, both the villages and the people and there were no tourist at all and it gave me the chance to take some nice pictures. be also aware that i found the people not so happy to have their picture taken, if you want to take some nice pictures of lijiang you have to to wake up quite early in order to avoid the crowd.

The Dai ethnic group lives in the southern part of Yunnan Province, mainly in the Xi Shuang Ban Na region. The area is subtropical, with plentiful rainfall and fertile land.

Local products include rice, sugar cane, coffee, hemp, rubber, camphor and a wide variety of fruits. Xi Shuang Ban Nna is the home of China''s famous Pu''er tea. The dense forests produce large amounts of teak, sandalwood and medicinal plants, and are home to wild animals including elephants, tigers and peacocks.

The Dai language belongs to the Chinese-Tibetan language family and has three major dialects. It is written in an alphabetic script.

In Lijiang, people are suggested to stay at a hotel in the old town. Thus you can enjoy the old town by yourself conveniently. But the hotels locate in the old town are old. The service is so so and the facilities in the hotel is not good. Just the location is very good. There are some new and good hotels in the new town, such as some newly built 5 star hotels. The facilities are good there. But the new town is a little far from the old town. It is about half an hour by car. Although it is not difficult to find a taxi from the new twon to the old town in daytime, it is still inconvenient as people can not wander around the old town and feel the atmosphere anytime . If you do not put so much emphasis on the accommodation, hotels locate in the old town is recommended.

We attended a tour to Yunnan Lijiang in 2005. At the Dong Ba Culture Academe in Lijiang, after visited the Dong Ba Culture Museum guided by a young lady who called herself the student of the academe, we were lead to a long tunnel by the way, really a small temple. There are several light holder and rows of butter lamps in the tunnel. On the platform, there were many fortunetelling folders. Following a monk/ Taoist's guidance, I lightened a lamp and put it on the lampstand and picked up a folder. A man dressed as a Taoist opened the folder and exclaimed that: What a fortunate and well-off welldoer! Then I burnt a fistful of votive joss sticks and was charged RMB330.00. I assumed that donating RMB330 to the Dong Ba Culture Academe was also meaningful, so I accepted it. After I gave him that money, the man said RMB330 is not enough. The joss sticks I burnt valued at RMB990.00. I was so angry about that. In case of the security, I left RMB330 to him and left the temple right away. The young lady who lead us there explained that it did nothing with her and the Daoist would not pay any coin to her. I reported the incident to the local government afterward. What bad memory! Take care and be cautious to the sites unlisted in your itinerary.
