I will be attending a conference in Shanghai in Dec. I plan to check out of my hotel Sunday 12/20 and would like to take a 3 day tour. From what I have read I think I would enjoy Suzhou and Hangzhou.
I will book a return flight for either 12/22 or 12/23 departure time around 4:55PM.
Should I wait and book train and hotel for these travels at my conference hotel in Shanghai or try to book in advance?
Do you think if we get a early start on Sunday and depart Tues from Shanghai at 4:55PM that allows enough time or should we stay a extra day.

The reason for picking these 2 cities to visit is because the climate sounds relative mild for this time of year. Would you make a different recommendation?

OR SHOULD I JUST BUY A WARM COAT AND VISIT BEIJING?

District about Shanghai

Shanghai is split in two by the Huangpu River (黄浦江 huángpǔ jiāng), with the older town on the west bank known as Puxi (浦西 pǔ xī) and the brash new development on the east side being Pudong (浦东 pǔdōng).

Areas within Puxi:

The Bund (外滩 wàitān) - the colonial riverside of old (and reborn) Shanghai, including the Yuyuan Gardens (豫园 yùyuán)
French Concession - the leafy district once knows as the Paris of the East, including the refurbished shikumen houses of Xintiandi
Xujiahui - Southwest part of Shanghai
Gubei - Close to the Hongqiao airport, a Carrefour, and with a large expat population
Nanjing Road - China''s most famous shopping street, leading to People''s Park (人民公园 rénmín gōngyuán) and Jing''an (静安 jìng ān)
Hongkou (虹口 hóngkǒu) - home of Fudan and Tongji university, plus a park and museum for famed writer Lu Xun.
Yangpu (杨浦 yángpǔ) - contains the excellent and spacious gongqing forest park (共青森林公园 gòngqīng sēnlín gōngyuán)
and across the river:

Pudong - the skyscraper-laden new financial and commercial district on the east bank of the river
Outlying districts:

嘉定 - Jiādìng
青浦 - Qīngpǔ
金山 - Jīnshān
南汇 - Nánnuì
松江 - Sōngjiāng
宝山 - Bǎoshān

Many ancient cities in China have city walls, which were built up for lining out the city preventing the invasion of outsiders. Their function is familiar to the castles in European cities. Due to the historical reasons, many parts of the wall was tore down or was not well preserved. However, the Nanjing city wall still maintains the record of the longest city wall in the world. Highly recommend for your visit. It is quite visible in many connecting areas which is between downtown and suburb.

Hangzhou is renowned for its beautiful scenery and regarded as ''Heaven on Earth''. The great Italian traveler, Marco Polo once remarked that city is the most beautiful and splendid in the world!

It''s an incredibly beautiful city. Hangzhou is famous for its jasmine tea, but its tranquil lake is also a big draw. If you''re looking for a really lovely place to spend a few days, Hangzhou is for you. The beautiful West Lake night view is especially attractive. There is night boat cruise could take. Not a bad choice.
