Historical Sites within Xian City

City Wall of Xi'an (城墙) - The best preserved city wall in China which circles the city around. It is has been restored and is wide enough to easily ride 5 bikes across on. You can rent one at the top of the South gate. If you want to foot it through a complete loop of the walls takes approximately 3 hours. The landscaped park around the base of the exterior walls and moat also makes for a pleasant stroll and gives a different perspective on the battlements and towers.

Shaanxi Provincial Museum(陕西历史博物馆), the birthplace of the ancient Chinese civilization and could be called a showcase of ancient civilizations.

Forest of Steles (西安碑林 Xīān Bēilín) situated in the Shaanxi Provincial Museum, this collection of 2,300 stone tablets and epitaphs is the largest and oldest of its kind in China. This includes the famous Nestorian Stele, dating from the 7th century. It depicts the coming of Nestorian Christianity to China. The Nestorian Stele is in Showroom Number 2 and is the first stele on the left.

Big (Wild) Goose Pagoda (大雁塔 Dà Yàntǎ) Located at Ci'en Temple and built by Emperor Gaozong(Li Zhi) in 652 AD. Emblem of the city of Xi'an.

Little Wild Goose Pagoda (小雁塔 Xiǎo Yàntǎ). Located at Jianfu Temple and completed in 709 AD.
Drum Tower (鼓楼 Gǔlóu) located in the exact center of the city and Bell Tower (钟楼 Zhōnglóu) located northwest within the Muslim Quarter

The Grand Mosque (清真寺 Qīngzhēnsì), behind Drum Tower, built in a perfect mixture of Islamic and Chinese architecture styles with seating for 1,000 worshippers and the Muslim Street (回民街 Huímín Jiē) around it.

You really have to master the art of using chopsticks if you visit China. In every restaurant, you will be provided with chopsticks instead of forks and knives. Don't be frightened. They are easy to use. Use your thumb and the fourth finger to grip one stick and your forefinger and middle finger to grip and control the other stick. After practicing a while, you will be able to pick up pieces of food. If you are able to pick up a bean with chopsticks, this means that you have "graduated". If you cannot use them, you can always ask for fork and knife in a tourist restaurant. But in ordinary restaurants, you may be told that they do not have them. If you are worried about it, take your own small folk with you.
