There are 198 stone tablets bearing the names of 51,624 Jinshi of the Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties, who passed the triennial imperial examinations, in the Temple of Confucius, Beijing. These tablets are material evidence of the imperial examination system in ancient China. To pass the imperial examination used to be a tremendous honor and almost the only way out for poor scholars to alter their destiny.
