Eastern Qing Tombs

To the east of Beijing in Zunhua City lies the Eastern Qing Tomb (1616-1911). It is the largest and most complete one of its kind in China. The designer chose a place against mountains as the tomb site to meet the criteria of feng shui. In ancient China, keeping a harmonious relationship with environment was considered as a way to pursue eternal life. Built against the southern foot of Mt. Changrui, the site covers an area of 2,500 square kilometers (965 square miles).
