Erqis River is the only one flows towards the west, discharging itself into the Arctic Ocean

Burqin County is a small county in the border area with Russia, Kazakstan and Mongolia. It is located at the southwest foot of Altay Mountains and the northern edge of Junggar Basin. It gets its name form the Burqin River, which flows into the Erqis River. In the Western Han Dynasty (206BC – 24AD), this county was the pasture land of the Huns. In the Sui and Tang Dynasties, it was under the control of Turkic.

The duration is about 1.5-2 hours. It takes about CNY 200-300 based on different car types. You may save money by sharing a car with others.

Albert, you need to fly from Urumqi to Altay. It takes around an hour. The flights are available everyday.

The problem is there is no direct train between the two places. You need to make a transfer at Lanzhou, Xi'an or Zhengzhou. If this is not a problem for you, you can do that. Well, the journey should be very long. Take Zhengzhou for example. It takes at least 35 hours from Urumqi to Zhengzhou and another 15 hours to Guangzhou then.

Thank you for your quick response. We are two very keen amateur photographers. We travelled from Kunming to Lhasa by car with a driver and a guide Aug 2009, and would be interested in a tour including Urumqui and Kashgar - as often as possible off the beaten roads and in contact with local villagers. Any good tips or warnings?
