Hi, it only takes no more than two hours from Kunming city center to Shilin by bus. However, suggest you buy a day tour to get there, for it is harder to get back to city by bus. If you can take part in a tour, the expense os much fewer. One day for the two sights is enough.
Xishan is 30 minutes from the city (Bus 6, or 51) and take a cable car to admire the Dianchi Lake. You can take 10, 71 or take taxi (20-30 rmb) to Golden Temple. The expo garden also has cable ways to thoe two scenic spots. Good luck!
