If we went to visit Hohhot, what will be expected? Will it be cheaper to travel to Gegentala grassland or Huiteng Grassland?
Sep. 24,2009 21:54
Mr.Dobin replied:
You can experience the horse-riding, visit the Gegentala Grassland to experience the Mongolian culture and stay in the herdsmen's tent and enjoy the Mongolian Singing and Dances, etc. Although it is cheaper to travel to Huiteng Grassland, I suggest you visit the Gegentala Grassland, since the accommodation conditions and local services in Huiteng Grassland are all not satisfying compared with the latter.

Good day! I think you can visit the beautiful Gegentala grassland and Xilamuren grassland near Hohhot. Hope I spell both of them correctly. Besides, the Dazhao Temple, Five-Pagoda Temple and Tome of Beauty Zhaojun are all worth visiting.

Choose to visit Datong because of the Yungang Grottoes, 6 miles west of the city, while about eight hours train ride west of Beijing. The caves contain a fine collection of caved-sandstone Buddhist figures, more than 50,000 of them in 53 caves, though many have been defaced or beheaded. In general, this collection is not as impressive as that in the Magao Caves near Dunhuang, but they are easier to get to, and you are not hurried through the caves as much. After going there, found another highlight - the Hanging monastery is more worthwhile of the visit. Datong itself is a filthy coal-mining town with a few good sites. The city is badly polluted and the transportation is scary. Datong is not a good tourism city, but the famous sites as Yungang caves, hanging monastery, Nine Dragon Screen... are worthy your visits. By the way, taking train is the best way of transportation from Beijing to Datong while Beijing and Xian are the only convenient cities to reach Datong.

I took a tour to Inner Mongolia this August and we just met the Mongolian Naadam festival. Lots of traditional Mongolian sports like wrestling, hourse racing, camel racing and archery were presented. The mongolian people on the grassland were very hospitable, we were invited to join in their dance friendly. That was really a sweet memory. I heard from our guide that Naadam festival is usually held around mid August every year. Wish you have the opportunity to savor the festive atmosphere during your visit.
