Useful tips: The Sister's Meal Festival of the Miao people is a big feast generally held on Mar. 15th of the Chinese lunar calendar. It is regarded as the Chinese Valentine's Day. Girls are the main characters of the festival. A few days before the festival, girls begin to collect different sorts of leaves in the mountains and dye glutinous rice red, purple, green, yellow and black. The different colors have different meanings. Green represents their beautiful hometown, red symbolizes the prosperous village, yellow means the rich harvest, purple stands for affluence, and white signifies pure love. The festival offers an opportunity for young people to pursue their lover. During the festival, all the girls will be dressed up in elaborate clothes, shining silverware, crowns, hairpins, earrings and bracelets. They wrap some Sister's rice in bundles. If a girl puts a pair of red chopsticks in the Sister's rice, it means the girl wants to go steady with the boy. If the boy gets the rice with garlic or chilli, that means he is spurned and should date another girl. Attractions such as firecrackers, bullfighting and horse racing make the festival even more exciting and joyful.

Xijiang is a very cool Miao minority village. We got a direct bus from Kaili at 9 or 9:30am for Y20. It took around two hours. If necessary it''s also possible to take a bus to Leishan and then go on to Xijiang but it would take longer. We stayed in Miao''s Home Guesthouse, which has an English sign and is used to foreigners, though I don''t think they spoke English. It''s easy to find; getting off the bus and following the main road there are several guesthouses in a row right by the little square. It was Y30 each for a three-bed dorm room with bathroom. They never did add a third person. They also serve food with an English menu. If you see an expanded English menu with a lot more dishes, I did the English translation. We only stayed overnight and it takes little time to see the whole town, but it would be worth spending more time and relaxing. There was a random and excellent performance during the afternoon in the square. There were certainly other tourists but it did not have a touristy feel.

We have been to Guizhou during labor's day. Luckily we just met the Sister's Meal Festival, the Miao Minority's valentine's day, which made our entire trip exceptional and memorable.

Our guide told us that the festival will be held every year from March 15 to March 17 based on the lunar calendar.

It is really very busy during that period and worthwhile to visit. The local people will dress up, the clothes are really very beautiful, their headwears are very delicate, we have never seen before. Also most interesting, you can see the bullfight and visit the local market. We really had a very very good time.

Besides, you can visit Qingman Miao Village, Shiqiao Miao village and Langde Miao Village in Guizhou.

Qingman Miao Village : One of the biggest characteristics here is that a guest who visits a household at will may have witnessed the entire process of traditional Miao clothes-making.

Visit Shiqiao Miao village to see its traditional way of making paper from the bark of mulberry tree.

Langde Miao village: The villagers in Langde wear long skirts, hence they are "Long Skirt Miao".

In general, it is really very interesting and worth to have a visit to Guizhou. We highly recommend you can visit Guizhou, especially during their festival. Remember Sister's Meal Festival. ^_^
