Day 01: Arrival in Beijing
Arrive in Beijing and get prepared. Stay overnight at the local hotel.
Day 02: Beijing - Laolongtou - Shanhaiguan
Embark on a four-hour morning train ride to the town of Shanhaiguan, near the eastern end of the Great Wall. Upon arrival, begin the Great Wall trekking adventure from Laolongtou (Old Dragon Head), where the 3,000-mile-long Great Wall plunges into the Pacific Ocean. Hike for about 4 kilometers along the Wall and arrive at the strategic Shanhaiguan Pass. Visit the Great Wall Museum next to the pass.
Day 03: Shanhaiguan - Jiaoshan - Jiumenkou - Shanhaiguan
Start today's trekking at Jiaoshan Great Wall. The trail at Jiaoshan section takes you through some dramatic scenery into the Yanshan Mountain. Move on to Jiumenkou Section in the afternoon where extensive ancient defense works were constructed. Return to Shanhaiguan by late afternoon.
Day 04: Shanhaiguan - Liujiakou
Driving through rolling hills, arrive at Liujiakou Great Wall, which is located within Lu Long County and contains beautiful Ming-era calligraphy bricks in the Wall. The towers here are very close to each other, thus forming an intensive defense system. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the Wall, and stop by a couple of small villages where you can chat with farmers and visit their homes.
Day 05: Liujiakou - Huangyaguan
Start to hike on another section of the Great Wall - Huangyaguan. Here the Wall winds through a great variety of landscapes and thus creating magnificent vistas along the mountain ridges. This section features strongholds, fortresses, turrets and water barriers. The most famous spots are the Phoenix Tower, North Pole Pavilion, and the Forest of Stone Tablets. Later in the day, you will visit a couple of scenic spots and villages.
Day 06: Huangyaguan - Simatai - Jinshanling
The drive from Huangyaguan to Simatai takes about 3 hours through a varied landscape. The construction of the Simatai Section on the border between Beijing and Hebei Province began in 1368. The 19-kilometer wall was built with unique structural design and fine craftsmanship. The 35 watchtowers vary from each other in architectural details. Among them, the famous Wangjinglou (Capital Viewing Tower) at the elevation of 986 meters is constructed on sheer precipices. At the end of the day, travel to Jinshanling for overnight and get ready for next day's hiking.
Day 07: Jinshanling
Today you hike on the section of Jinshanling Great Wall. Hikers will encounter as many as 150 watchtowers, battlements, terraces and turrets on this section of the wall. Architecturally, there are towers of various shapes: square, circular, oblate and cornered; and roofs of different structures: flat, vaulted, domed and quadrangular, or with an octagonal caisson ceiling. You will also explore the Gubeikou Defense System of the Great Wall in the afternoon.
Day 08: Jinshanling - Huanghuacheng - Beijing
For the last day's trekking, you take on Huanghuacheng section, probably one of the most difficult sections. It is completely unreconstructed and runs over a little reservoir. The view as you climb to the top is stunning. Here the Wall is particularly precipitous so one should expect lots of steps and difficult climbing at some points. Drive back to Beijing in late afternoon and check in at the hotel.
Day 09: Departure from Beijing
Board your homebound flight.
