Dear Jack, i do suggest you learn some simple Chinese before your tour or hire a guide. It will be really hard for you to order the meals if you speak no Chinese. Maybe you can bring a guidebook with you, like LonelyPlanet Mandarine. Hiring a guide also won't cost too much. You can refer to this forum http://community.travelchinaguide.com/ and many Chinese guys there volunteered to be guide for you, just want to practice their English.
May you have a good trip!

You can ask someone who knows Chinese write a note for you, saying 我们不吃肉,鱼,蛋和味精. When ordering the meals, show the note to the waiters. Some good restaurants have the English menus, however, most restaurants not. The staff in KFC only can speak a little simple English. It is no problem for ordering food. The same with the staff at hostels. Anyway, it won't be a big problem.

We are planning to visit China. We don't eat meat, fish, egg and MSG. We cannot speak Chinese at all. How can we explain these to the waiters when eating out? Is there Engligh menu in the general restaurant? How could we order the food? We don't want to spend too much on the meals in superior restaurant. Are the staff at KFC can speak English? I know most staff at the hotels can speak English. What about the staff at hostels? Sorry for so much questions. TKS!
