Some business stores, government office and some companies will be closed for about 7-10 days. Some large shopping malls will keep operating.
Getting info from the news, as the May Day holiday will be cancelled next year. More and more Chinese people put their traveling plan forward to Spring Festival Holiday, which means hotels, flights, trains will be all in great demand and the sites will be very crowded.
We have been to HK 3x in the past year. I travel with a toddler and baby. In each of those times, I get the Airport Express and Octopus Card. Very very convenient. Easy to get on the train despite the luggage and 2 strollers! :) It's very easy to use as well. You take the train into the city then a designated bus will drop you off at your hotel. Travelling by train is faster than hotel transfer. Plus you get three days on unlimited mtr use which you will find useful. Highly reccomended!
fyi. the tourist card cannot be used in convenience stores, ferries, buses and other stores unless you top up or add more monies or value to the card.
