Xidi has a couple of hotels in the old homes where foreigners are allowed. It might be quite pleasant to stay after the tour groups have gone home late afternoon. Tip: in Xidi on the left in the car park “before” you go through the turnstiles take a digital pic of the large scale map of the town written in English. Quite handy for doing a self guided tour through the narrow lanes.
I did the package tour from Tunxi IYH for 180Y (incl lunch), which is not bad value considering the entry fees alone amount to 165Y.
I caught the 8am bus to Wuyuan from Tunxi. I was told there’s also one at 12:30pm (2.5 hrs). The bus station in Tunxi is no longer just off Beihai Lu a short walk east of the YH. But is now situated about 5 kms west of town on Beihai Lu, about 8Y by taxi.
Several motorbike guides met the bus. I paid one 15Y to take me (20-30 mins) to Little Likeng to dump my pack and find a place to stay the night. Then negotiated 100Y (Too little? Too much?) for a tour to Big Likeng, Sixi, Yancun, (and a sneaky shortcut into Qinghua just to view the bridge without paying a fee) and back to Little Likeng.
Do not buy things at Shuyuan Gate. Most things are fake and much more expensive than its real value.
