From Xiahe I took the bus to Tongren. The woman who sold me the ticket said it took 4 hours but it ended up being just less than 3.5 hours. Cost 21 rmb.

It was absolutely stunning. I've travelled all over the world and to my eyes this was some of the most beautiful scenery I've seen (which means it appealed to me personally, I know this kind of thing is subjective and others may disagree). The first hour is on dirt road and then it is sealed. The terrain is mountainous but there is quite a lot of variation, from alpine to sheer rocks. The mountains were covered in wild flowers along with small Tibetan villages and herds of goats, sheep etc.

I can't describe why it was so beautiful but it was a fascinating trip.

At Tongren I straight away took a bus to Xining. There seemed to be pretty frequent buses running. Cost of 30 rmb took around 4 hours. The scenery on this trip was also beautiful although it didn't appeal to me quite as much.

In Xining I am staying in the Dong Sheng Hotel. Very basic but at 30rmb it was the best price I found. That is in a 3 bed room. Slightly east of the train station.

You could also do the trip in reverse (from Xining to Xiahe) but I don't think it would be as nice because of the light. We had the sun behind us the whole way.
